MD House Ways and Means Committee to hear classroom digital device safety bill

safetechforschoolsmaryland, 23 February 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 23, 2017
(ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND) The House Ways and Means Committee of the Maryland General Assembly will hear legislation on Friday, February 24th at 1:00 that directs the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) to craft safety guidelines for the use of digital devices in Maryland public schools.

Delegate Steven Arentz (R-District 36) has sponsored the legislation, House Bill 866, "Primary and Secondary Education - Health and Safety Guidelines and Procedures - Digital Devices." The bill has 25 co-sponsors and broad bi-partisan support. An identical bill has been cross-filed by Senator Steve Hershey (R-District 36), co-sponsored by Senator James Brochin (D-District 42) and Senator Susan Lee (D-District 16). It has been referred to the Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee.
HB866 aims to protect Maryland students from the health hazards that medical experts have for many years associated with daily use of digital devices. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has had regulations governing the use of computers for office workers since the 1990s, but schools have no medical oversight.

Rise in Mumps Outbreaks Prompts U.S. Officials to Weigh Third Vaccine Dose

"Unlike outbreaks of measles and whooping cough, which have taken place in populations with significant numbers of unvaccinated people, the mumps outbreaks have been occurring in communities with high rates of immunization and residents who often have received both recommended doses of the vaccine."

What does this tell us? Maybe the vaccine is not as effective as claimed. This 2014 article published in HuffPost Canada, cites court cases against Merck, the manufacturer of the mumps vaccine used in the United States. One case, United States v. Merck & Co., stems from claims by two former Merck scientists that Merck "fraudulently misled the government and omitted, concealed, and adulterated material information regarding the efficacy of its mumps vaccine in violation of the FCA [False Claims Act]."

Rise in mumps outbreaks prompts U.S. officials to weigh third vaccine dose
by Lena H. Sun, The Washington Post, 23 February 2017

Federal health officials are evaluating the benefit of an additional dose of the mumps vaccine because of the increasing number of mumps outbreaks since 2006. More than 5,000 cases of the contagious viral illness were reported last year in the United States, the most in a decade.

New Vaccines Will Permanently Alter Your DNA

(Update: Part-1 here, Part-3 here)

I reported on this stunner in my previous article, “Genetically modified people: what could go wrong?” But it deserves its own article. The information needs to be spread far and wide. Now.

The reference is the New York Times, 3/9/15, “Protection Without a Vaccine.” It describes the frontier of research. Here are key quotes that illustrate the use of synthetic genes to “protect against disease,” while changing the genetic makeup of humans. This is not science fiction:

“By delivering synthetic genes into the muscles of the [experimental] monkeys, the scientists are essentially re-engineering the animals to resist disease.”

“’The sky’s the limit,’ said Michael Farzan, an immunologist at Scripps and lead author of the new study.”

This highly informative paper on increasing teen cancer rates omits a potential risk factor for testicular cancer.

The authors report that testicular and thyroid cancers are the most rapidly increasing cancers among teens, yet the known risk factors for these cancers do not seem to offer explanation for their marked increase. Although ELF and RF are not 'known risk factors', they are certainly possible risk factors for testicular cancer. It seems reasonable for the authors to consider the rather substantial evidence for adverse effects of ELF and RF from cell phone radiation and other wireless RF exposures on testicular morphology and function where the evidence for pathological changes indicates another possible risk factor for testicular cancer.

Leaving 3G and 4G behind - it's the next generation data for your phone

5G is coming to a cell tower near you faster than you might think: with speeds that could eventually hit hundreds of times those of 4G, it promises to transform the way we communicate with each other and with our devices once again. Very early trials are underway, and we've more details below. We can't give you any exact statistics about 5G yet, because the standard has yet to be defined: researchers and authorities are hoping to have a 5G specification in place in the next couple of years. Radio communications experts from the 193 member countries of the United Nations will be setting down the technical requirements in 2016.

What Will Happen When They Know?
clearlightventures.com, 22 February 2017

What happens when a false belief collides with reality? This is the question of our time. Do you shift course and change or double down or continue on as though nothing has happened? Does wealth and power allow you to change the laws of physics or biology? What happens when the majority of people have accepted a reality and you are now not only wrong, but in the minority? What happens when denial is no longer an option?

It’s easy to point to politicians and business leaders who are challenged by reality. It’s much harder when this situation appears in your own life. What happens when a reality undermines your identity in the world? Will you listen, even when the answer is something you don’t want to hear? Will you be able to change your mind, even though you have invested your time and money? Will you take a stand to prevent others from being harmed? Will you resist change even when harm to yourself is inevitable? Or have you even lost the capacity to change at all?

medicalxpress.com, 22 February 2017

Women actively infected with genital herpes during early pregnancy had twice the odds of giving birth to a child later diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to a study by scientists at the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

The study is the first to provide immunological evidence on the role of gestational infection in autism, reporting an association between maternal anti-herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) antibodies and risk for ASD in offspring. Results appear in mSphere, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

"We believe the mother's immune response to HSV-2 could be disrupting fetal central nervous system development, raising risk for autism," says lead author Milada Mahic, a post-doctoral research scientist with the Center for Infection and Immunity and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

Disabled veteran disputes bill increase, smart meter reading

by Elisse Ramey, abc12.com, 17 February 2017

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJRT) - (2/17/17) - A disabled veteran is locked in a dispute over his utility bill - and fears he could ultimately lose his house. We've been hearing people talk about fluctuations in their bills since smart meters have been installed.

Edward Vernier and his wife, Tammy, say their energy bills aren't t adding up.

"Me being a hundred percent disabled vet, living on a fixed income, they're just starving us to death. There's no way we could be using that much energy," he said.

He says their bill is on average $270.00. On a budget plan, they pay about $150.00 a month, but now he says their bill is around $470.00.

Lansing — Michiganians packed a state House panel hearing Tuesday to voice their concerns with so-called “smart meters” that transport utility usage information directly to companies.

Many residents who testified in the nearly filled committee room said they worry that the new utility meters hurt their health and invade their privacy because they have no say in whether the company can install the particular kind of meter at their home unless they pay extra fees. Utility representatives countered that studies have shown their concerns are unfounded.

Jasmine Early of Sterling Heights said she was infuriated that DTE Energy sent workers onto her property without her permission. She urged others to believe people who testified before the committee about alleged health problems they believe to be associated with the electronic smart meters.

“I don’t want it in my house,” Early said. “We are suffering health issues. Who is gonna help us? You can mock us, you can call us fools. But we are the ones who are suffering.”

Plant and Animal Electromagnetic Sensitivity

Bats respond to very weak magnetic fields.
Animal and plants do not experience Electrophobia... This article has links to articles and studies on the electromagnetic sensitivity of plants, animals, and marine life as recent as 2016.

Science: Plant and Animal Electromagnetic Sensitivity
electrosensitivity.co

Introduction

Animal Electromagnetic Sensitivity long known:
Animal sensitivity to electromagnetic exposure has been known as long as human electromagnetic sensitivity. The biological effects of the electric eel were known in ancient times. From the 17th century scientists studied how electricity and magnetism affected both animals and humans. Many modern studies depend on animal or plant research to establish biological pathways before moving on to human studies to verify low-level effects of electromagnetic exposure.

Animal and plants do not experience Electrophobia:
One great advantage of animal and plant studies is that there is no likelihood of confusion between real Electromagnetic Sensitivity and psychological Electrophobia, since animals and plants cannot be conditioned by a cognitive, as opposed to a behaviorally conditioned fear, and cannot therefore suffer from a 'Nocebo' effect, although anyway studies show that the 'Nocebo' effect is not part of real human Electromagnetic Sensitivity.

Yale University Study Shows Association Between Vaccines and Brain Disorders

Yale University Study Shows Association Between Vaccines and Brain Disorders
by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., EcoWatch,
8 February 2017

A team of researchers from the Yale School of Medicine and Penn State College of Medicine have found a disturbing association between the timing of vaccines and the onset of certain brain disorders in a subset of children.

Analyzing five years' worth of private health insurance data on children ages 6-15, these scientists found that young people vaccinated in the previous three to 12 months were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with certain neuropsychiatric disorders than their non-vaccinated counterparts.

This new study, which raises important questions about whether over-vaccination may be triggering immune and neurological damage in a subset of vulnerable children (something parents of children with autism have been saying for years), was published in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Psychiatry, Jan. 19.

“These masts have been foisted upon us, we were given no opportunity to object, and as ratepayers, the municipality works for us.”

THE affects of cellphone masts on the immediate environment is under the spotlight once again. Residents living in proximity to a mast that has been erected in Rick Turner Road raised the alarm after they became aware of symptoms they believe could be attributed to the electromagnetic waves emitted by the mast which was switched on in December.

Resident, Andre van Rooyen, said he has always been sensitive to electromagnetic waves and in early December started to show specific symptoms which he eventually realised he had been exhibiting since the mast started transmitting.

Workplace Wearables Raise New Privacy Dilemmas for Staff, Firms

Workplace wearables raise new privacy dilemmas for staff, firms
by Donal Power, Contributing Writer, readwrite.com,
11 February 2017

With the proliferation of wearable technology, companies are increasingly finding motivation to encourage staff to don connected devices.

But on IDG’s CIO site tech writer Gary Eastwood delves into some of the worrisome privacy implications of wearbles in the workplace on employees.

Companies are increasingly pushing wearable devices on their workers. In 2013, 2,000 firms worldwide offered their employees fitness trackers, but by 2014 that number had jumped to 10,000 and continues to rise apace.

“Employees are too cavalier about the privacy implications of using corporate-provided wearables,” warns Eastwood. “Employees need to understand why this is a problem before readily accepting a company distributed wearable and whether it is a good idea.”

5G Health Effects: Is This Wireless Technology Even Safe?

"For decades, Americans were told things like cigarette smoke, DDT, Monsanto and other pesticides were safe, when we now know they’re linked to cancer and other health problems. So are we going to do it again — on a massive scale — with wireless without even properly studying human health impacts."

5G Health Effects: Is This Wireless Technology Even Safe?
by Dr. Josh Axe, draxe.com

When it comes to accessing faster wireless, it seems like a no-brainer. The faster, the better, right? And with Verizon recently announcing the company finalized its 5G radio specifications, it seems the lighting-fast data speeds are within reach. (After all, the company is already performing pre-commercial 5G field tests in New Jersey, Texas and Massachusetts.) (1) But here’s the thing. We aren’t quite sure of 5G health effects.

In fact, we’re still trying to figure out how electromagnetic radiation involved with current forms of wireless technology are impacting human health. Some scientists and public health experts worry we’re rushing toward lightning-fast 5G without fully understanding 5G health effects.

The Increasing Toll of Adolescent Cancer Incidence in the United States

"For many of the most common teen cancers, known risk factors are unlikely to account for the majority of cases. Childhood cancers, including teen cancers, are often thought of as being sporadic, rising from new mutations by chance. If these cancers are truly sporadic, why would their incidence increase over time? The answer to this question is unknown but the presence of yet to be confirmed risk factors seems likely."

When Evidence Says No, But Doctors Say Yes
by David Epstein, ProPublica,
22 February 2017
This story was co-published with The Atlantic.

Years after research contradicts common practices, patients continue to demand them and doctors continue to deliver. The result is an epidemic of unnecessary and unhelpful treatment.

Extract:

When you visit a doctor, you probably assume the treatment you receive is backed by evidence from medical research. Surely, the drug you’re prescribed or the surgery you’ll undergo wouldn’t be so common if it didn’t work, right?

For all the truly wondrous developments of modern medicine — imaging technologies that enable precision surgery, routine organ transplants, care that transforms premature infants into perfectly healthy kids, and remarkable chemotherapy treatments, to name a few — it is distressingly ordinary for patients to get treatments that research has shown are ineffective or even dangerous. Sometimes doctors simply haven’t kept up with the science. Other times doctors know the state of play perfectly well but continue to deliver these treatments because it’s profitable — or even because they’re popular and patients demand them. Some procedures are implemented based on studies that did not prove whether they really worked in the first place. Others were initially supported by evidence but then were contradicted by better evidence, and yet these procedures have remained the standards of care for years, or decades.

Outlawing Microchipping Humans Not So Far-Fetched, Nevada Senator Says

Outlawing microchipping humans not so far-fetched, Nevada senator says
by Sandra Chereb, Review-Journal Capital Bureau, 13 February 2017

CARSON CITY — State Sen. Becky Harris said a bill to prohibit forced microchipping of people is not as far-fetched as it might seem, because it happens in some places around the world.

Senate Bill 109 would make it a Class C felony to require someone to be implanted with a radio frequency identifier, such as microchips placed in pets.

The idea for the bill came from a constituent, the Las Vegas Republican said.

“As I began to look into the issue, I was surprised with the merit that I believe the issue warrants,” Harris told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday.

She said sales of radio frequency identifiers are escalating around the world, and a company in Australia as of June 2016 sold more than 10,000 implantable chips with do-it-yourself kits.

Researchers: Long-term cell phone use may increase your risk for a brain tumor

by Bob Segall, wthr.com, 21 February 2017

New research suggests long-term use of cell phones is linked to a significantly higher risk of developing a brain tumor.

The study, published by researchers from India, shows a 33% increased risk for brain tumors for mobile phone use of 10 years or longer (or 1,640 or more hours in lifetime).

The researchers examined a dozen case-control studies conducted between 1966 and 2016, and they published their findings this month in the peer-reviewed medical journal, Neurological Sciences.

“I think this review paper provides pretty compelling evidence that cell phone use is a risk factor for increased brain tumors. The evidence has gotten much stronger over the past several years,” said Joel Moskowitz, director of the Center for Family and Community Health at the University of California Berkeley. “From a scientific standpoint, it’s important to look at review studies because they give you a much better picture than a single study. Individual studies have their own weaknesses. All studies have their limitations. So looking at a number of studies from different countries using varying methodology is significant. This is compelling.”

Moe’s personal experience of the importance of this subject has resulted in her currently leading a Sintef project looking into pacemakers and their security.

A Case Against Microwave Science

"IF the microwave industry were to admit what’s been scientifically proven since the 1930s, i.e., non-thermal radiation adverse waves affect human biology (bioelectromagnetics), then their emission regulations for every ‘smart’ gadget invention would have to be revised and corrected to the point where they could not implement safety standards because it would be too costly to implement.  Consequently, the industry and its mouthpieces—industrial professional societies, e.g., IEEE, ICNIPR, etc., keep pushing smart gadgets as ‘safe’.

Science is the hallmark of everything—supposedly, except when it’s out to lunch in its hypotheses or when it is downright fraudulent, as is the case with vaccinology in order to protect vested Pharma interests. Even the U.S. CDC and FDA cover Big Pharma’s derriere when it comes to chanting the mantra “vaccines are safe.” So much science in the peer review realm is out there published stating totally opposite documented scientific facts, but still U.S. federal health agencies function on the ‘flat earth’ concept regarding human health safety!

Los Alamos Study Finds Airport Scanners Can Rip Apart and Alter DNA

Los Alamos Study Finds Airport Scanners Can Rip Apart & Alter DNA
Dr. Kathy J. Froticollective-evolution.com
19 February 2017

Can we ever believe what our government tells us about airport security devices?

Apparently not. First they told us those X-ray scanners (that showed way too many naked body parts) were perfectly safe.

Even the manufacturer of the device, Rapidscan, openly admitted the scanners had not been adequately tested. The truth was later revealed that the safety tests turned out to be totally rigged, as reported by Natural News.

With fabricated results, the technology was quickly rushed into every airport worldwide. No one listened to what the scientists in the field of radiation were trying to tell them – it’s not safe.

It wasn’t until the backscatter radiation levels the scanners were putting off began showing an increased incidence of cancer in TSA agents (along with the lawsuits that quickly followed), that the devices were finally yanked. The TSA quickly scrambled for another solution.

Long-Term Cell Phone Use Increases Brain Tumor Risk

"We found evidence linking mobile phone use and risk of brain tumours especially in long-term users (10 or more years). Studies with higher quality showed a trend towards high risk of brain tumour, while lower quality showed a trend towards lower risk/protection."

Long-term cell phone use increases brain tumor risk

Electromagnetic Radiation Safety, 20 February 2017

Mobile phone use and risk of brain tumors: a systematic review

The results of a newly published review and meta-analysis of the research on cell phone use and brain tumor risk found that long-term or heavy cell phone use was associated with a statistically significant increased risk of brain tumors.

Overall, the study found that long-term or heavy cell phone use was associated with a 33% increased risk of a brain tumor.

The risk of a brain tumor for long-term cell phone use varied depending upon the quality of the research study with higher quality studies tending to yield greater risk estimates (see Table below). For the five highest quality studies, the estimates ranged from a 21% increased risk to 2.6 times the risk of a non-cellphone user. For five lower quality studies. the estimates ranged from a 47% reduced risk to 5.1 times the risk of a non-cellphone user.

This was supposed to be America’s nuclear century.

The Three Mile Island meltdown was two generations ago. Since then, engineers had developed innovative designs to avoid the kinds of failures that devastated Fukushima in Japan. The United States government was earmarking billions of dollars for a new atomic age, in part to help tame a warming global climate.

But a remarkable confluence of events is bringing that to an end, capped in recent days by Toshiba’s decision to take a $6 billion loss and pull Westinghouse, its American nuclear power subsidiary, out of the construction business.

Cayla is a blond, bright-eyed doll that chatters about horses and hobbies. She plays games and accurately answers questions about the world at large. She could also be eavesdropping on your child.

That’s the stark warning parents in Germany received on Friday from the country’s telecommunications watchdog, the Federal Network Agency, which said hackers could use the doll to steal personal data by recording private conversations over an insecure Bluetooth connection.

The watchdog said it was pulling the doll off store shelves and banning them in Germany.

“Objects that have concealed cameras or microphones that can send information endanger the private sphere,” said Jochen Homann, the agency’s president. “The Cayla doll is forbidden in Germany,” he added, citing a German telecommunications law.

Dad horrified to find vile messages in popular game on son's iPad
kidspot.com, 16 February 2017

The former rugby league star said the disturbing messages in the virtual world “turned his stomach”.

A mortified dad has expressed serious concerns over an online game – aimed at children - which allows strangers to contact and communicate with young kids.

Roblox, which markets itself as a gaming site for kids and teens, invites children into a virtual world to “create adventures, play games, role play and learn with their friends”.

It has more than 30 million unique monthly users - predominantly kids.

Dad Iain Morrison wants the chat facility on the site removed as it allows strangers to message kids directly.

Excerpts

In the past 2 years, a new class of infant physiologic monitors marketed to parents for use in the home has emerged. Smartphone applications (apps) integrated with sensors built into socks, onesies, buttons, leg bands, and diaper clips have the capability to display infants’ respirations, pulse rate, and blood oxygen saturation, and to generate alarms for apnea, tachycardia, bradycardia, and desaturation (Table). Despite the lack of publicly available evidence supporting the safety, accuracy, effectiveness, or role of these monitors in the care of well infants, sales of these products are brisk and the market is expanding....

There are no medical indications for monitoring healthy infants at home ....

Cell Phone Radiation Lawsuits

Many consumer advocacy groups are calling for much stronger warnings about the risk of brain tumors and other injuries from cell phone radiation, indicating that manufacturers must do more to educate consumers and ensure that they are aware of the risk.

Cell Phone Radiation Lawsuits
aboutlawsuits.com, Updated: February 2017

Radio frequency energy from cell phones could be linked to an increased risk of cancer, studies have shown. Holding or using the phones too close to the body has been linked to a potential risk of brain tumors, breast cancer and infertility.

STATUS OF CELL PHONE CANCER LAWSUITS: Product liability lawyers are continuing to review and evaluate whether financial compensation may be available through cell phone lawsuits on behalf of individuals diagnosed with brain cancer or other injuries that may be associated with significant use of mobile phones in close proximity to the body.

OVERVIEW: Cell phones are used by more than 5 billion people worldwide and there has been long debate and concerns about the potential radiation side effects from cell phones.

Many Americans do not trust modern institutions to protect their personal data – even as they frequently neglect cybersecurity best practices in their own personal lives

Cyberattacks and data breaches are facts of life for government agencies, businesses and individuals alike in today’s digitized and networked world. Just a few of the most high-profile breaches in 2016 alone include the hacking and subsequent release of emails from members of the Democratic National Committee; the release of testing records of dozens of athletes conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency; and the announcement by Yahoo that hackers had accessed the private information associated with roughly 1 billion email accounts. Finally, in late 2016 and early 2017 U.S. intelligence agencies (the FBI, CIA and Department of Homeland Security) both issued statements and testified before Congress that the Russian government was involved in the hack of the DNC with the aim of influencing the 2016 presidential election.

Petition to Premier Christy Clark, BC Utilities Commission garners over 200 names

A group of Anmore residents is petitioning Premier Christy Clark and the BC Utilities Commission to make BC Hydro put its new transmission line underground because of safety concerns.

Urs Ribary said the utility is ignoring residents' concerns and proceeding with plans to install a 230 kilovolt (kV) transmission line that will put families at risk of high exposure to electro-magnetic fields (EMF).

"Somebody has to stand up and put on the brakes," Ribary said. "We need a safer solution."

Although the existing line has cut through people's yards along a right of way for several decades, people now are more aware of the health risks of EMF, Ribary told The Tri-City News.

But spokesperson Judy Dobrowolski said the additional line will be consolidated with an existing line, reducing the number of structures and lowering the current magnetic field levels, while existing levels are already within World Health Organization standards.

But Ribary and his group say BC Hydro's data on EMF exposure is incomplete and ignores the long-term effects of regular exposure. Putting the line underground would avoid health risks to about 140 homes and up to 700 people, he said, but BC Hydro has not entertained the idea because of the cost.

South Africa: Cellphone Tower Threat to Residents

Residents and community activists gathered in front of
the tower to voice their concerns.

MTN SA media communications officer, Bridget Bhengu said, “This relates to the eThekwini pole project and all enquiries relating to it should be referred to eThekwini Municipality.”

Constant headaches, sleep deprivation and prolonged body pains are just a few of the ailments that Merebank residents have been complaining about after a cell tower was installed at the corner of Dubrigarth and Dinapur Road, last year.

Residents also claim they were not informed of the installation of the cell tower and were instead told that surveillance cameras were being installed. Now months later, the community is up in arms as they fear the radiation from the tower is resulting in the many illnesses and discomforts they are suffering with.

Study on Cell Phone, EMF Dangers Ignored

Study on Cell Phone, EMF Dangers Ignored

For years, scientists have been warning that pollution from electro- magnetic frequencies emitted by cell phones and WiFi “likely cause” brain and heart cancers in test animals, but no one is listening. Even worse, as technology spreads around the world, no one is working on ways to help minimize exposure to these types of toxic EMF waves.

Far-sighted health advocates have warned about the dangers of electromagnetic frequency (EMF) pollution, broadly including power lines, cellular phone towers, and cellular and cordless telephones, for a long time. New technologies such as Wi-Fi and “smart meters” bring EMF closer to us—in our homes, workplaces, and many public spaces. They also make communication towers more prolific, which intensifies the problem.

A recent study on cellular telephone dangers and proposed action by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) went virtually under the radar.

Those seat-back screens that have long been part of in-flight entertainment systems are preparing to depart from many airplanes, experts say, and will gradually be replaced by content streamed to passengers’ electronic devices through improved wireless service.

But as with a delayed flight, don’t expect the changes to take off in a hurry.

For airlines, the switch would save money and cater to customers’ changing viewing habits, which rely increasingly on tablets and smartphones, William Hoppe, the leader of travel, logistics and hospitality at Intelenet Global Services, said in an email.

Researchers suggest disorder should be considered a neurological condition and not simply a behavioural one

People with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder have distinct differences in their brain structure, a new study finds, suggesting the disorder should be considered a neurological condition and not simply a behavioural problem.

The research — published Wednesday in Lancet Psychiatry — was described by its authors as the largest-ever review of ADHD patient brain scans.

The scientists evaluated MRI scans and other data from more than 3,200 people, comparing 1,713 patients who had been diagnosed with ADHD to a control group. The patients ranged in age from four to 63.

I'll Never Bring My Phone on an International Flight Again. Neither Should You.

How many potentially incriminating things do you have lying around your home? If you’re like most people, the answer is probably zero. And yet police would need to go before a judge and establish probable cause before they could get a warrant to search your home. What we’re seeing now is that anyone can be grabbed on their way through customs and forced to hand over the full contents of their digital life.

A few months ago I wrote about how you can encrypt your entire life in less than an hour. Well, all the security in the world can’t save you if someone has physical possession of your phone or laptop, and can intimidate you into giving up your password.

And a few weeks ago, that’s precisely what happened to a US citizen returning home from abroad.

On January 30th, Sidd Bikkannavar, a US-born scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory flew back to Houston, Texas from Santiago, Chile.

On his way through through the airport, Customs and Border Patrol agents pulled him aside. They searched him, then detained him in a room with a bunch of other people sleeping in cots. They eventually returned and said they’d release him if he told them the password to unlock his phone.

Wi-Fi calls on planes OK? Answer is loud and clear: No
by Bart Jansen , USA TODAY,
12 February 2017

WASHINGTON — The Transportation Departmenthas received more than 7,000 comments, often punctuated with capital letters and exclamation points, that almost universally urge a ban against Wi-Fi calls on planes.

The comments thundered against the prospect of voice calls that are possible through Internet services such as Skype that aren’t now governed by federal regulations, in contrast to cellular calls.

The outpouring is reminiscent of 2013, after the Federal Communications Commission considered dropping a 1991 ban against cell calls on airline flights, but abandoned the proposal amid public outrage. The ban stemmed from a concern about jamming ground-based relay stations for calls; it doesn’t cover Wi-Fi calls.

For lack of regulations governing Wi-Fi calls, then-Transportation secretary Anthony Foxx proposed requiring airlines to notify passengers if calls are allowed on flights. He also invited comments from travelers and the industry about whether the department should ban calls entirely.

Canada: Toronto: East-End Middle School Announces Cellphone Ban

16 February 2017

An east-end middle school is making the call to ban cellphones from all of its classrooms and hallways after parents and teachers reported distractions were at an all-time high.

Earl Grey Senior Public School principal Bill Vatzolas sent a note home to parents this week, notifying them of the decision.

“This policy change is the result of conversations with our staff, parents and students as we collectively look to minimize distractions in the classroom and reduce the inappropriate uses of the devices during the school day,” Vatzolas wrote in the letter home.

The devices are allowed during the lunch hour but accessing social media, texting, or taking or viewing videos is prohibited.

This towering 82ft high mobile phone mast has finally been removed - after a 17-year battle by residents.

Shooters Hill Association – a group of neighbours in Meir – has spent thousands of pounds, sent hundreds of letters, visited Westminster and staged peaceful protests to try to get the eyesore dismantled.

The Orange mast was erected in 1993 and the association was set up in 2000 when residents found out the tower had been erected without proper consultation.

Families have always suspected there could be a link between cancer deaths in the area and the phone mast – which could be seen from as far as a mile away.

Critical Condition: Health Experts Sound the Climate Alarm

Critical condition: Health experts sound the climate alarm.
by Peter Dykstra, The Daily Climate, 16 February 2017

Experts paint a dire portrait of climate change’s public health impacts, but leave a little room for hope.

ATLANTA—In a gathering impacted by presidential politics, an all-star cast of public health experts largely stuck to their own bleak script: Climate change is poised to unleash an unprecedented, global public health crisis.

Not even former Vice President Al Gore, who served as the day's emcee, waded into the political swamp. He presented a half-hour, health-themed version of his much-lauded slide show.

While Gore summarized the gobsmacking array of climate impacts—heat stress, water supplies, food security, mental health, respiratory and infectious diseases, allergens, and weather disasters—he left room at the end for some more convenient truths: The world, he said, is more than able to shift to a clean energy economy, reduce CO2 emissions, and blunt the worst impacts of climate change.

Harvard internist Ashish Jha discussed the climate-related spread of pathogens, and provided one of the conference’s few direct political jabs: “Walls,” he said, “will not keep these pathogens out.”

Could your Fitbit data be used to deny you health insurance?

Wearing a fitness tracking device could earn you cash from your health insurance company. At first, this sounds lucrative for the people who participate, and good for the companies, who want healthier insurance customers. But it’s not quite so simple.

Under the program, people who have certain health insurance coverage plans with United Healthcare can elect to wear a Fitbit activity tracker and share their data with the insurance company. The data would be analyzed by Qualcomm Life, a company that processes medical data from wireless sensors for doctors, hospitals and insurance companies. Depending on how active participants are, as measured by the Fitbit, they could earn as much as US$1,500 toward health care services each year.

Mainichi Japan, 16 February 2017

The Japan Pediatric Association and the Japan Medical Association on Feb. 15 unveiled a poster warning against the dangers of the excessive use of smartphones.

The poster will be sent to approximately 170,000 members of the two associations to be put up at clinics nationwide.

The poster poses the question, "What do I sacrifice with time spent on my smartphone?" and responds with the six categories of sleep, academic performance, brain function, physical strength, vision, and communication ability. The effects of smartphone use in these areas are explained using data from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and illustrations.

The world has become economically dependent on the Internet. The ability to connect and share information is essential to the functioning not just of economic markets but also of government itself. As computer technology advances we as a society become ever more dependent on an Internet of things that extend far beyond our home computers and laptops. Everything from automobiles to zoos are web-connected today and those connections multiply exponentially as new connected devices are invented and marketed.

The Internet of things (IoT) is certainly a convenience to us all, but it’s also a pathway to chaos for cyber criminals and enemies of the United States. Eric Lieberman, technology and law reporter for The Daily Caller tells of an unnamed university that was hacked through its light bulbs and vending machines.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Robert De Niro Speak at National Press Club Conference on the Issue of Mercury in Vaccines

A $100,000 Message from Robert F. Kennedy Jr & Robert De Niro to American Journalists & Scientists
by Arjun Walia, collective-evolution.com
15 February 2017

You can view the full press conference here:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Chairman of the World Mercury Project (WMP), announced a $100,000 challenge today aimed at putting an end to including mercury, a neurotoxin that is 100 times more poisonous than lead, in vaccines administered in the U.S and globally.

It’s offered to anybody, including journalists and scientists, who can provide a study showing that it is safe to inject mercury into babies. This will be difficult, as hundreds of studies (that were also present at the press conference in print form) suggest that it isn’t safe at all, and can significantly increase the risk of developing neurodegenerative disorders.

Reykjavik Appeal on Wireless Technology in Schools

Reykjavik Appeal on wireless technology in schools

We, the signers, are concerned about our children's health and development in schools with wireless technology for teaching. A vast amount of scientific studies have shown considerable medical risks with long-term exposure to Radiofrequency Radiation (RFR) from wireless devices and networks well below the recommended reference levels from the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). We ask the authorities to take their responsibility for our children's future health and wellbeing.

In May 2011 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) at WHO classified RFR as a Group 2B carcinogen, i.e., ‘possibly’ carcinogenic to humans. Since then more scientific studies on exposure to RFR in humans, animals and biological material have strengthened the association of an increased risk for cancer, especially brain tumors. Several laboratory studies have shown mechanistic effects in carcinogenesis such as oxidative stress, down regulation of mRNA and DNA damage with single strand breaks. The IARC cancer classification includes all sources of RFR. The exposure from mobile phone base stations, WiFi access points, smart phones, laptops and tablets can be long-term, sometimes around the clock, both at home and at school. For children this risk may be accentuated because of a cumulative effect during a long lifetime use. Developing and immature cells can also be more sensitive to exposure to RFR. No safe level of this radiation has been determined by any health agency and therefore we have no safety assurances.

Over 170 Million Exposed IoT Devices in Major U.S. Cities

Researchers discover over 170 million exposed IoT devices in major US cities
by Charlie Osborne for Zero Day, 15 February 2017

Webcams, medical devices, routers and databases are only some of the devices on show.

Researchers have discovered more than 178 million Internet of Things (IoT) devices visible to attackers in the ten largest US cities.

On Wednesday, researchers Numaan Huq and Stephen Hilt from Trend Micro revealed at the RSA conference in San Francisco, California, that many IoT devices are lacking basic security and are visible using services such as the Shodan search engine, which is used to discover devices which are accessible from the Internet.
