Samsung's replacement Galaxy Note 7 phones have been overheating and suffering from battery problems, according to reports, fueling concerns that the fixed "exploding" phones could still be unsafe.

Some customers have reported that the updated Note 7 phone, which Samsung began issuing last week after a global recall of the smartphones at the beginning of the month, have been losing power quickly, even when charging, and becoming unexpectedly hot.

The Korean electronics giant acknowledged that some customers in South Korea had complained about the replacement non-removable batteries, according to the Wall Street Journal.

It is not clear how many devices are affected, or if people in other countries have experienced similar problems with the exchanged phones. Samsung said it is undergoing "close examinations" of the reported issues.

Samsung, which has delayed resuming sales of the Note 7 until October 1 in South Korea while it handles the exchanges, said the new overheating complaints were "completely unrelated to batteries" and "isolated incidents" resulting in problems in the manufacturing process.

Samsung is committed to producing the highest quality products and we take every incident report from our valued customers very seriously. In response to recently reported cases of the new Galaxy Note 7, we conducted a thorough investigation and found a battery cell issue.

To date (as of September 1) there have been 35 cases that have been reported globally and we are currently conducting a thorough inspection with our suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market. However, because our customers' safety is an absolute priority at Samsung, we have stopped sales of the Galaxy Note 7.

For customers who already have Galaxy Note 7 devices, we will voluntarily replace their current device with a new one over the coming weeks.

We acknowledge the inconvenience this may cause in the market but this is to ensure that Samsung continues to deliver the highest quality products to our customers. We are working closely with our partners to ensure the replacement experience is as convenient and efficient as possible.

After dozens of reports that Note 7 phones had overheated, some to the point of exploding, Samsung was forced to recall millions of its latest smartphone. During the "humiliating" global recall of 2.5 million phones US regulators and airline safety organisations warned users to switch the phones off.

A total of $26 billion was wiped from Samsung's value in the wake of the recall, which analysts say could cost the company up to $1 billion (£770m). Last week it sold its stake in four technology companies "to focus on its core business" and raise a further 1 trillion won (£681m).
