Switzerland: Electrosmog Exposure: Are We Preparing the Way for the Next Disease of Civilization?

Memorial to the insatiable hunger for data:
a mobile phone antenna
Swimming in a sea of rays
by Jürg Steiner, Berner Zeitung, 22 December 2013 (translated from German by Google and the Editor of this blog)

We are sending ever faster and bigger data packets through our mobile and wireless network. We are doing so through electromagnetic radiation. Are we preparing the way for the next disease of civilization?

Casting WLAN networks like fishing nets, the Spitalgasse in Bern would be impassable. From the street, via a smartphone, one can locate dozens of pulsating wireless screens within a confined area. There are no benefits but everyone is irradiated, also by the mobile antenna covering the city center at full strength.

In the train, the same picture: from left and right, pulsating electromagnetic waves from private phones and laptops, while travelling through the sea of rays of the mobile phone network.

Testimony – While France is on the point of creating a “white zone” to protect them, electrosensitive persons living in Switzerland often remain considered as crazy.

Sosthène Berger, 49, receives « Le Matin » in his garden in La Neuveville (Berne), where he spent his days between April and October 2011, only entering his house to take a shower and sleep. That year, the engineer discovered he was “electrosensitive”. Suddenly, Wi-Fi, cell phones, tablets and even the vacuum cleaner, drill and sewing machine made his existence hell. Since then, he lives in a “permanent building site” in order to better protect himself against electromagnetic waves.

Fisher-Price 'iPad Apptivity Seat' only the worst example (so far) of a culture awash in screens that may be harming childhood development

It's Christmas Eve in the Digital Age, but for those concerned about the growing amount of screen time that teenagers and young children—even infants—are now experiencing, the holiday gift-giving season may become an increasingly "horrifying" affair.

As the rise of technology dovetails with the multi-billion dollar toy and media industries, children are now growing up in a digital environment that may seem harmless to some but could be dramatically harming key components of their physical, mental and emotional growth at one of the most precious and fragile stages of human development.

The New York Times reports on Tuesday:

A recent survey of 1,000 parents with children between 2 and 10 found that more than half planned to buy a tech item for their children this holiday season. About two-thirds of those planned to give a tablet or smartphone, according to the survey, which was taken for PBS Kids, the brand of the public broadcasting network aimed at young children.

Carl Sagan on Science and Technology

And here is what Carl Sagan says about the media in the United States.
(Ref. Media Matters for America)
A Science Icon Died 17 Years Ago. In His Last Interview, He Made A Warning That Gives Me Goosebumps.
by Rajiv Narayan, upworthy.com

Carl Sagan inspired a generation of scientists with his work in and out of the classroom. But he didn't always present science with cheer. In this clip, he passionately defends science with a grave warning. It's something we all need to hear.

Extract from an Interview with Charlie Rose, 27 May 1996  (text transcribed by the editor of this blog)

Sagan: …We live in an age based on science and technology with formidable technological powers.

Rose: Science and technology are propelling us forward at accelerating rates.

Sagan: That’s right, and if we don’t understand it, by “we” I mean the general public - “ if it’s something I’m not good at, I don’t know anything about” – then, who’s making all the decisions about science and technology that are going to determine what kind of future our children live in? Just some members of Congress? But there is no more than a handful of members of Congress with any background in science at all and the Republican Congress has just abolished its own office of technology assessment, the organization that gave them bipartisan competent advice on science and technology. “We don’t want to know. Don’t tell us about science and technology.”

Dr. Oz Says Keeping Your Cell Phone in Your Bra Can Cause Breast Cancer

UPDATE:  The 6 December episode of the Dr. Oz Show, "Why You Should Keep Your Cell Phone Out of Your Bra" is now available.  It should be viewed by everyone.  His guests include Tiffany Frantz, who at age 21 was diagnosed with breast cancer and cancer surgeon, Dr. John West.

Here in Geneva, where more and more young women are being diagnosed with breast cancer, we drew the attention of the English Speaking Cancer Association (ESCA) to this issue. Our awareness-raising was taken rather lightly.  "I personally don't know of anyone who keeps a cell phone in their bra," commented one of the group's key personnel.  Geneva's main newspaper, the Tribune de Genève, published our comment on this issue in their readers' mail column.  Dr. Monica Castiliogne-Gertsch, Director of the Center of Oncology/Breast Cancer, University Hospital of Geneva (HUG), who is also engaged in research and advocacy, has always been receptive to our communications on breast cancer and electromagnetic radiation.

Dr. Oz says women who keep their cell phones in their bras are putting themselves at risk for breast cancer.

On the Dec. 6 episode of the Dr. Oz Show ("Why You Should Keep Your Cell Phone Out of Your Bra"), Dr. Oz said he believes there is a definite link between cell phones and cancer.

"When it comes to cell phones, the bra has become the new purse," said Dr. Oz, who said millions of women are unknowingly endangering themselves for the sake of convenience.

The Relationship Between Cell Phone Use, Academic Performance, Anxiety, and Satisfaction with Life in College Students

The relationship between cell phone use, academic performance, anxiety, and Satisfaction with Life in college students

Summary and Abstract of the study to appear in the journal Computers in Human Behavior

Kent State University researchers Andrew Lepp, Ph.D., Jacob Barkley, Ph.D., and Aryn Karpinski, Ph.D., all faculty members in the university's College of Education, Health and Human Services, surveyed more than 500 university students. Daily cell phone use was recorded along with a clinical measure of anxiety and each student's level of satisfaction with their own life, or in other words happiness. Finally, all participants allowed the researchers to access their official university records in order to retrieve their actual, cumulative college grade point average (GPA). All students surveyed were undergraduate students and were equally distributed by class (freshman, sophomore, junior and senior). In addition, 82 different, self-reported majors were represented.

From Digital Media to Digital Dementia

A recent article in a Swiss newspaper on e-courses shows
children using laptops on their laps, exposing sensitive
parts of their bodies to electromagnetic radiation.

Experts warn that digital media is detrimental to learning and can cause insomnia, depression, addiction, and many physical illnesses concerning the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal system (lack of exercise, incorrect sitting posture), up to dementia.  Switzerland is moving towards providing school children with tablets and organizing courses on digital media for parents, children and educators, with little mention of health risks.

Psychiatrist and brain researcher Manfred Spitzer warns parents and educators

The neuroscientist and medical director of the Psychiatric University Hospital Ulm, Professor Manfred Spitzer, met with intense press coverage about his new best-seller “Digitale Demenz. Wie wir uns und unsere Kinder um den Verstand bringen” (Digital dementia. How we drive us and our children mad) and his trenchant theses. Referring to many neurological findings and supplementing new findings Spitzer reinforces in his book previous research of reputable media experts saying that the too frequent use of the Internet can make people dumb. He never denigrated juvenile and adult Internet users however. Reacting to the spiteful attacks by the press, he said in an interview: “I do not pathologize but I state: Where there are effects there are also risks and side effects.”1 However, Spitzer does not just express warnings; he also shows what parents, teachers and politicians can do to protect our youth.

Switzerland: Is Wi-Fi in Schools Making Children Sick?

Is Wi-Fi in schools making children sick?
by Hannes von Wyl, 20min.ch, 21 November 2013  (Translated from German by Google and the Editor of this blog)
From 2015, elementary school students will already be working with mobile phones and tablets - over WLAN (Wi-Fi)  connected to the Internet. Critics warn of health problems and even leukemia and tumors.

(Photo: Tablets and mobile phones in the classroom: from 2015/16 this should be the standard. Because the devices can only be connected wirelessly to the Internet, the schools will be equipped with Wi-Fi. According to critics, irradiation from the radio waves results in lack of concentration and more cases of ADHD and cancer.)

According to Curriculum 21, which should be implemented in all German-speaking schools in Switzerland from the school year 2015/2016, children will learn how to use new media technologies in kindergarten and in primary school. Due to the proliferation of tablets and smartphones, not only computers and notebooks, but also "small mobile devices", will be taken into account.

Unforeseen consequences of electromagnetic fields
(high risk - more than 10 years)

The ubiquity of electromagnetic fields (EMF) raises concerns about potential implications for human health, in particular with regard to the use of mobile phones, power lines or antennas for broadcasting. Over the last decade, the spread of wireless devices has accelerated enormously. The convergence of mobile phones with computer technology has led to the proliferation of new and emerging technologies.  This development has increased exposure to electromagnetic fields, the health impacts of which remain unknown.

Anxiety over the potential risks related to EMF has risen. Studies are difficult to conduct, since time trend studies are inconsistent due to the still rather recent proliferation of wireless technology. The WHO has classified extremely low-frequency magnetic fields and radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, such as radition emitted by cell phones, as potentially carcinogenic to humans (Class 2B carcinogen). Furthermore, a recent ruling by an Italian court suggested a link between mobile phone radiation and human health impairment. Overall, however, scientific studies are still inconclusive regarding possible adverse health effects of EMF.

If a direct link between EMF and human health problems were established, it would open doors for new claims and could ultimately lead to large losses under product liability covers. Liability rates would likely rise.

Interview with the Author of « Big Pharma, An All-powerful Industry that Toys with Our Health »

I am currently reading "Big Pharma", a very revealing book about the ways in which the pharmaceutical industry is toying with our health.  The Nouvel Observateur interviewed the author, Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen, on the parts of the book about the drug "misinformation" on the Internet and environmental pollution of medications. (The book is not yet available in English.)

"For information on health, the Internet is completely unreliable"

Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen publishes "Big Pharma". Interview.

Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen, 20 July, at his home in Paris, the day he finished "Big Pharma". Born in 1951 of Danish parents, MIKKEL BORCH-JACOBSEN grew up in Strasbourg and studied philosophy in France, where he defended his doctoral thesis before a jury which included Derrida, Levinas and Lacoue-Labarthe. He left for the United States in 1986, where he currently teaches literature at the University of Washington in Seattle.

In "Big Pharma", Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen… has asked a group of Anglo-Saxon authors to refine his study of a milieu that he has been scrutinizing for the past ten years: the pharmaceutical industry.

BibliObs: There is a debate in France. Some believe that we are now in an era of medical misinformation or manipulation by prescribers, scientific knowledge being "in the hands of” drug manufacturers; and those who complain are often perceived as Manichaean accusers. Has medical knowledge been corrupted?

French Documentary Film Reveals How the Mobile Industry Manufactures DoubtPosted by SkyVision Solutions,
12 November 2013

With their documentary “Ondes, Science et Manigances” [or "Waves, Science and Shenanigans (Intrigue)"], the journalist Nancy Meritens and film director Jean Hèches show how the mobile industry creates doubt about harmful radiofrequency waves.

Faced with the construction of a telephone relay antenna in front of their homes and anxious to know if they were at risk for their health, these two people have traveled Europe to understand the environmental issues presented by this technology.

Through interviews with several whistleblowers, including citizens, journalists, and scientists, this film reveals how, like the tobacco industry, the lobby of the mobile phone industry has built a strategy of “product defense” by artificially creating a scientific doubt about the harmful effects of electromagnetic waves.

Electrosensitivity Finally Recognized as a Disease?

Electrosensitivity finally recognized as a disease ?
by Philippe Samzun, lanouvellerepublique.fr, 5 November 2013 (translated from French by the Editor of this blog)

Electrosensitive for more than 10 years, a person from the Touraine region has just been acknowledged as a disabled worker. Testimony.

A graphics designer in Tours, Véronika has just been acknowledged as a disabled worker by the Departmental Home for Handicapped Persons (MDPH) because of her electrosensitivity. “A first in Indre-et-Loire and without doubt in the Central Region,” says Emmanual Denis, departmental delegate for the association Robin des Toits.

Aged 56, this person from the Touraine region has been able to avail herself of a medical certificate dating from last April, issued by a physician in Nantes, specialized in professional and environmental pathologies.

An impaired social and professional life

Dr. Dominique Dupas indicates that Véronika “presents a clinical picture wholly characteristic of an idiopathic environmental intolerance to electromagnetic fields.” He adds that this condition, which belongs to the group of medically unexplained diseases, is very disabling for social and professional life. “Patients with this condition present difficulties of access to or keeping a job such that they justify in my view the attribution of handicapped worker,” concludes the physician.

Breast Cancer Epidemic Still Raging After 30 Years of "Awareness" and Pink Ribbons

Think Before You Pink: Toxic Time Is Up
by Annie Sartor, MsMagazine.com, 24 October 2013

Why is the breast cancer epidemic still raging after 30 years of “awareness” and pink ribbons?

Each year, corporations pack the shelves with pink-ribbon products, surrounding us with “breast cancer awareness” messages. These products help to raise billions of dollars in the name of breast cancer, yet more than 40,000 women in the U.S. still die of the disease every year. And many corporations sell pink-ribbon products that actually contain chemicals linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. At Breast Cancer Action, we call this blatant hypocrisy “pinkwashing.”

34 Scientific Studies Showing Adverse
Health Effects From Wi-Fi
by WakingTimes / WifiInSchools, 30 October 2013

Here is an excellent collection of scientific papers finding adverse biological effects or damage to health from Wi-Fi signals, Wi-Fi-enabled devices or Wi-Fi frequencies (2.4 or 5 GHz), complied by campaign group WiFi In Schools.

The papers listed are only those where exposures were 16V/m or below. Someone using a Wi-Fi-enabled tablet computer can be exposed to electromagnetic fields up to 16V/m. Papers are in alphabetical order. A file of first pages, for printing, can be found here.

If you feel like sending a copy of this collection to the local schools in your area, you can search for them here and either print out this article to post or email the link.

The Deliberate Lies They Tell About Diabetes

At least 26 million Americans are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and another 79 million are prediabetic.  What’s hidden behind medical smokescreen is that Type 2 diabetes is completely preventable. The cure lies in a true understanding of the underlying cause (which is impaired insulin and leptin sensitivity) and implementing simple, inexpensive lifestyle adjustments that spell phenomenal benefits to your health.

The Deliberate Lies They Tell About Diabetes
by Dr. Mercola (this excellent article probably dates from 2011 and is posted in full without several of the images)

There is a staggering amount of misinformation on diabetes, a growing epidemic that afflicts more than 26 million in the United States today. The sad truth is this: it could be your very OWN physician perpetuating this misinformation

Most diabetics find themselves in a black hole of helplessness, clueless about how to reverse their condition. The bigger concern is that more than half of those with Type 2 diabetes are NOT even aware they have diabetes.

Diabetes: Symptoms of an Epidemic

The latest diabetes statistics 1 echo an increase in diabetes cases, both diagnosed and undiagnosed. By some estimates, diabetes has increased more than 700 percent in the last 50 years!

How to Reduce Cholesterol Levels by Natural Means

Too many doctors write a prescription for statins for their patients the moment they see cholesterol levels that are too high. This was the case with my (now former) family doctor. I told him, “Give me a few months to change eating habits, and the levels will be lower”. We must challenge our doctors’ recommendations because sometimes medications can be more harmful than beneficial, as is the case with statins prescribed to persons who have not had a previous cardiac event. This article gives excellent dietary advice to those persons who wish to lower their cholesterol levels through natural means.

Getting Cholesterol Too Low May Put Older Woman at Risk
People's Pharmacy, 28 October 2013

Q. Dear Joe & Terry Graedon,

Thank you for all the information you make available to the public about alternatives to many pharmaceuticals. You are providing a needed service to the public.  I looked on your website for alternatives to statins to lower high cholesterol. I found a suggestion about using vinegar, but none of the respondents had reported whether it worked.  My cholesterol was 187 and my doctor has said if I don't lower it in three months on my own, he wants to put me on statins. I would prefer not to take such drugs.  Do you know of any other options that might work? I would like to lower my cholesterol naturally before my next appointment.  Again, thank you for your public service.

Pearl

A. Dear Pearl,

Thank you for your thoughtful question. If you have not had a cardiac event, we're not sure your doctor would be doing you any favors by prescribing a statin. In fact, if your total cholesterol is 187, we are hard put to understand why he would want to lower your cholesterol levels any further.

Very disturbing state of affairs that we are experiencing in Ontario Schools. School Board is threatening to fine parents and to expel students (click here for story) and they are also threatening teachers who do not toe the line regarding WiFi. What kind of country has Canada become? How can educational authorities be so insensitive, so militant, and so ignorant? Perhaps someone should follow the money because none of this makes any sense.

Campaign Launched to Educate the Public Regarding Link Between Prolonged Skin Contact of Cell Phones and Breast Cancers

Dr. Lisa Bailey, one of California's top breast surgeons, says young women should never store their phones in their bras. “Until more data becomes available, efforts should be made to encourage cellular phone users to follow the recommendations of mobile device manufacturers and to avoid skin contact… In our practice, we have started to incorporate frequency of cellular phone use and placement location into part of our routine patient-history documentation. Physicians should document this behavior and also inform their patients that, until sufficient safety data becomes available, prolonged skin contact with cellular devices should be avoided.”

Environmental Health Trust Launches Campaign Aimed to Educate the Public Regarding Link Between Prolonged Skin Contact of Cell Phones and Breast Cancers

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/24/2013 -- Most women have no idea that cellphones are two-way microwave radios that should not be kept directly on the body warns Environmental Health Trust (EHT), a group promoting safer phone use especially for non-adult users and for pregnant users. The group has launched a public education campaign called “Save the Girls” that includes an online banner ad, media tour, doctor’s pamphlet and a social media campaign (#savethegirls).

For many young women today, tucking cellphones in the bra has become a cool, hip way to have easy access to these electronic devices. Women can jog, drive, shop or sit in darkened movie theaters, quickly responding to tingly vibrations at their breast. “The month of October serves as a reminder of breast cancer awareness, the media are packed with warnings about the disease.

Facing Lawsuits Over Deadly Asbestos, Paper Giant Launched Secretive Research Program

Chrysotile asbestos
The following article is one in the Center for Public Integrity series, Toxic Clout: how industry uses well-paid experts to minimize the hazards of toxic chemicals and fend off liability, regulation, or both. The Atlanta-based company, Georgia-Pacific Corp., faced a nearly $1 billion in liability from its product, Ready-Mix, a putty-like building material, known as joint compound, containing the cancer-causing substance, asbestos. Named in more than 60,000 legal claims, the company sought salvation in a secret research program it launched in hopes of exonerating its product as a carcinogen.

The article also describes Daniel Stupino’s fight against the company. He regularly used the Georgia-Pacific joint compound, among other brands, in renovating apartments, sealing joints between sheets of drywall with the product. When he sanded it, he said, it was “like a snow … that penetrate[d] all over … in my body, my head, you know, my clothes.” His case against Georgia-Pacific settled mid-trial. He died of mesothelioma on Dec. 14, 2012, just before his 64th birthday.

Chrysotile asbestos, is the only type of asbestos still imported to the United States, with some 2.3 million pounds entering the country from Brazil in 2012. More than 107,000 people die of asbestos-related diseases each year, the World Health Organization estimates. “All types of asbestos cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, cancer of the larynx and ovary, and asbestosis (fibrosis of the lungs),” it warns. In all, 55 countries — but not the United States — have banned all forms of the mineral.

Protect Yourself from Laptops' Electromagnetic Radiation

NEVER use a laptop on your lap!  This woman is
irradiating her future baby with harmful
electromagnetic waves.
Protect yourself from laptops’ electromagnetic radiation
by Dr. Jon, emfhelp

Laptops and notebooks have become powerful enough to satisfy the computing needs of most people. They have also become very affordable and consequently gained much popularity especially with the younger generation and professionals. The problem with laptops is that they expose the user to significant levels of electromagnetic radiation. Their compact structure and light weight may lead to a false belief that they are relatively EMF safe. However using a laptop actually exposes you to higher levels of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) than using a bulkier desktop computer. There are several reasons for this and it is important to get a good grasp of the concepts as this will help you apply an effective laptop EMR defensive strategy and use your laptop safely.

Laptops emit several types of electromagnetic radiation

Cell Phones and Acoustic Neuroma: Comments on May 2013 Study from the United Kingdom

Read the following two articles on the May 2013 U.K. study linking long-term use of mobile phones and elevated risk of acoustic neuroma.

U.K. Acoustic Neuroma Link Fades Away After Data from 2009-11 Added
Microwave News, 6 October 6, 2013, Last updated 8 October 2013

The research group at the University of Oxford that reported a link between long-term use of a mobile phone and an elevated risk of acoustic neuroma (AN) in May now says that it is no longer there. In a short letter to the International Journal of Epidemiology (IJE), the Oxford team advises that when the analysis was repeated with data from 2009-2011, "there is no longer a significant association." Also gone, the team writes, is the "significant trend in risk with duration of use."

After ten or more years of phone use, the risk of AN is now only 17% higher with a confidence interval (0.60-2.27) that indicates the small increase is not significant. In their earlier paper, the Oxford group reported that the AN tumor risk more than doubled after ten years and was statistically significant (RR = 2.46, CI = 1.07–5.64).

Surgeon Dr. John West Addresses Cancer - Cell Phone Link on 'Dr. Oz Show'

OCMA Corner: Surgeon Addresses Cancer - Cell Phone Link on ‘Dr. Oz Show’
Physicians News Network, 15 September 2013

Dr. John West, a breast cancer surgeon at Breastlink in Orange County, recently traveled to New York City to film an upcoming episode with Dr. Oz’s TV show.

The episode focuses on suspected cell phone-related breast cancer in young women.

Dr. West, who is also the co-founder of the Be Aware Foundation, which funds clinical research through a partnership with Breastlink, said the Dr. Oz show contacted him after linking him to Tiffany Frantz.

The young woman drew wide media attention after being diagnosed with breast cancer in the area where she’s been storing her call phone inside her bra.

“We don’t have any scientific proof that cell phones cause cancer,” Dr. West told PNN last week. “It could be coincidence that women develop an unusual cancer right there on the breast, or this could be the tip of the iceberg.”

Today about 40% of college women keep their cell phones inside the bra.

Published Case Study Validates Link between Prolonged Skin Contact and Breast Cancers

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/23/2013 -- For many young women today, tucking cellphones in the bra has become a cool, hip way to have easy access to these electronic devices. Women can jog, drive, shop or sit in darkened movie theaters, quickly responding to tingly vibrations at their breast. Most women have no idea that cellphones are two-way microwave radios that should not be kept directly on the body warns Environmental Health Trust (EHT), a group promoting safer phone use especially for non-adult users and for pregnant users.

“As we broach the October reminder of breast cancer awareness, the media are packed with warnings about the disease. What’s missing from this welcomed public attention is the fact that the ways some people are using their phones today increases their risk of developing breast cancer and other diseases. A cellphone’s sporadic microwave radiation seeps directly into soft fatty tissue of the breast. That’s not a good thing,” warns EHT’s founder Dr. Devra Davis, cancer epidemiologist and veteran breast cancer researcher.

News from Geneva: Not Only is the Criminal Justice System Lax, But Also the Health Care System

Following is a personal testimony of my « health care » from mid-July 2013.

17 July: Suffering from sensitivity to cold in my teeth, I saw my family dentist, Dr. J, who after examining all my teeth, could find nothing wrong. The following day, he left on vacation.

26 July : With increasing pain in my teeth and jaw, I went to the Division of Stomatology and Oral Surgery at the dental school, Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva. After a panoramic x-ray and examination of all the teeth, the origin of the pain could not be identified.

3 August : Visit to the Emergency Room, Geneva’s University Hospital (HUG), where I waited 5 hours to see someone. I was taken up to the ENT Service, then told this was not the place to be and returned to the ER to wait another several hours to be seen by Dr. A. She recommended arranging a consultation with a doctor in the Maxillary-Facial Faculty of HUG, which I refused, just having seen my own dentist and dentists at the dental school. Dr. A could not identify the origin of the pain and sent me home with a prescription for pain-killers.

Alzheimer's Disease in Switzerland : Research and Treatment

Village in canton Bern being developed to accommodate
persons with dementia, foreseen to be completed in 4 -6 years.
According to the Swiss magazine, Hebdo (30 May 2013, no. 22), 36 million persons in the world today have Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). The disease is insidious, irreversible, and incurable. One in 10 persons is affected from age 65, and 1 in 4 from age 80. Dementia is the third cause of death after cardio-vascular disease and cancer (2009 Swiss statistics). It is projected that by 2030, world-wide, there will be 65.7 million persons with AD and 115 million by 2050. The average age of diagnosis is 65. It usually takes two years between the appearance of the first symptoms and diagnosis.

In 2010, there were 110,000 persons with AD in Switzerland, with 25,000 additional cases diagnosed each year. In 2050, it is projected there will be 300,000 cases. In 2009, the cost for care of AD patients was 7 billion Swiss francs (7.68 billion dollars).

In the United States the cost of dementia was $200 billion in 2012 and could go to as high as one trillion dollars in 2050. Only 8 out of 194 Member States of the World Health Organization have a “plan Alzheimer’s” for early diagnosis, better care of the sick, assistance for family members, and support for scientific research. Switzerland will become the ninth country to implement the plan.

Statin Use Associated with a 27% Increased Risk of Cataracts

Pharmaceutical companies have been able to downplay the risk of cataracts associated with statins for 25 years. Very few physicians ever mention this as a complication of statin therapy.

A new study published in JAMA Ophthalmology (online, Sept. 19, 2013) titled: "Association of Statin Use with Cataracts." Texas researchers compared 6,972 statin users to 6,972 nonusers.  The authors concluded: "this study found statin use to be associated with an increased risk for cataract." Specifically, they found a 27% increased risk of cataracts in statin users.

Lovastatin was the first of the new-generation statin-type cholesterol-lowering drugs on the market. It was approved by the FDA for sale in 1987. Even before the drug was approved, however, studies in dogs suggested that lovastatin might trigger cataract formation. A review in the journal Pharmacotherapy in 1987 titled "Lovastatin: A New Cholesterol-Lowering Drug" noted:

"The most common adverse effects are gastrointestinal, while the most serious are elevated transaminase levels and the potential for lens opacities."

Overcoming Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity: A Testimonial

Overcoming Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity
A Testimonial

by Guest Blogger, Chara Brooks. EarthCalm, 30 October 2012

Two years ago, after many lab tests and much in-depth history-taking, my doctor finally diagnosed me with a disease called “electromagnetic hypersensitivity”. What a relief!

I had so many different symptoms—from headaches to digestive problems to sleeping difficulties to rashes—that it had been a mystery to him what it could be I was suffering from. And I was worn out with dealing with all these symptoms for so many years.

But he’d done his research. He’d discovered that there’s a new disease that doctors are recognizing more and more these days: electromagnetic hypersensitivity—also known as electrosensitivity or EMF sensitivity.

Electromagnetic Sensitivity is on the Rise

Abstract

Breast cancer occurring in women under the age of 40 is uncommon in the absence of family history or genetic predisposition, and prompts the exploration of other possible exposures or environmental risks. We report a case series of four young women—ages from 21 to 39—with multifocal invasive breast cancer that raises the concern of a possible association with nonionizing radiation of electromagnetic field exposures from cellular phones. All patients regularly carried their smartphones directly against their breasts in their brassieres for up to 10 hours a day, for several years, and developed tumors in areas of their breasts immediately underlying the phones. All patients had no family history of breast cancer, tested negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2, and had no other known breast cancer risks. Their breast imaging is reviewed, showing clustering of multiple tumor foci in the breast directly under the area of phone contact. Pathology of all four cases shows striking similarity; all tumors are hormone-positive, low-intermediate grade, having an extensive intraductal component, and all tumors have near identical morphology. These cases raise awareness to the lack of safety data of prolonged direct contact with cellular phones.

MIAMI — The clues were buried in her bedroom. Before leaving for school on Monday morning, Rebecca Ann Sedwick had hidden her schoolbooks under a pile of clothes and left her cellphone behind, a rare lapse for a 12-year-old girl.

Inside her phone’s virtual world, she had changed her user name on Kik Messenger, a cellphone application, to “That Dead Girl” and delivered a message to two friends, saying goodbye forever. Then she climbed a platform at an abandoned cement plant near her home in the Central Florida city of Lakeland and leaped to the ground, the Polk County sheriff said.

Why Cell Phone Towers Are So Bad For Your Health

"The Precautionary Principle or Principle of Prevention needs to be followed whenever there is a possibility of harm to human health an exposure rises."

Why Cell Phone Towers Are So Bad For Your Health?
by Dr. M. Sirish, The Big Picture, 1st October 2010

Cell phones heat the brain while users make and receive calls. Cell phones scramble the brain and play havoc with the nervous system. This can cause high blood pressure, which leads to strokes. If cell phones are used for longer periods of time, they can damage long-term memory and even cause brain tumor [1-2]. On the other hand, cell towers are considered more harmful to people particularly those living within the radius of 500 meters as they continuously emit electromagnetic radiation (EMR) 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, and 365-days an year [3-5]. Towers emit radio-frequencies (RF), a form of EMR, which is essentially the same frequency radiation as microwaves and microwave ovens, for a distance as large as two miles. Low levels of radiation emitted by mobile phone towers are harmful. Scientists at the School of Public Health of Harvard University say that the radiation from cell phone towers is a serious health hazard [6].

Studies have shown that low levels of radiation can cause brain tumor, cancer, depression, miscarriage, insomnia, Alzheimer’s disease, apart from damaging cell tissues and the DNA. People living close to mobile towers will have disturbed sleep, headache and their immune system could be affected. The nearby apartments could become very hot. Television displays could show flickering images. Massive increase in radiation in the environment due to these towers is associated with increase in the incidence of diseases such as asthma, learning disabilities, anxiety disorders, attention deficit disorder (ADD), autism, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), epilepsy, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, cataracts, hypothyroidism, diabetes, malignant melanoma, testicular cancer, heart attacks and strokes [7-13]. Although radiation exposed by a person during a mobile phone call is 10 times higher than the exposure from a cell tower, mere standing in a wi-fi enabled area is equal to talking on your mobile for 20 minutes [14].

Clinical Manifestations of Reactions to Microwave Radiation : Paper Presented at International Symposium on "Biologic Effects and Health Hazards of Microwave Radiation", Warsaw, October 1973

We are looking for documents dating from before 1980 about the health effects of microwave radiation. Thanks to Citizens for Safe Technology, we have found one paper by M.N. Sadtikova of the Academy of Medical Sciences, USSR [former Russia]. This was part of the proceedings of an international symposium – “Biologic Effects and Health Hazards of Microwave Radiation” – which took place in Warsaw, Poland, 15-18 October 1973, sponsored by WHO, U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Scientific Council to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Poland. This is deeply troubling because 40 years ago, WHO, the United States authorities and Russia were already aware of the non-thermal biological effects of microwave radiation. Today, WHO and the health authorities of most countries refuse to acknowledge the biological effects of this radiation, which is being emitted by wireless technology (cell phones, mobile phone antennas, Wi-Fi), seriously jeopardizing our health, especially that of children and pregnant women.

Fukushima's Radioactive Ocean Plume to Reach American Shores in 2014

Fukushima's radioactive ocean plume to reach American shores in 2014
Natural News Buzz, 29 August 2013

New research shows that the radioactive ocean plume from the Fukushima nuclear power plant will reach the United States' west coast in 2014.

The study was performed by researchers from Australia's Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science and others, who published their findings in the journal, Deep-Sea Research 1. The researchers used a range of ocean simulations to track the path of the radiation from the Fukushima incident to identify where it would likely travel through the oceans over the next 10 years.

1973 Report Researching the Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) on Living Tissue Mentions Potential Danger to Human Health and the Need for Measures to Control the Proliferation of Devices Emitting EMF

Think about this: The following was written in a report, published in April 1973, on the work being undertaken as part of a program of research on the effects of electromagnetic fields on living tissue conducted in collaboration with the Department of Anatomy, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

“In view of the expected proliferation of MW devices in many different applications, a substantial increase in MW background activity is feared that may endanger human health. On this basis strict control of the use of these devices must be introduced while present safety standards are revised and extensive research is conducted into long term effects of exposure to low intensity MW radiation. In particular, a study of possible accumulative effects of MW radiation (directly or indirectly) through sensitization must be conducted…”

Forty years later, there are many countries in the world and particularly, millions, if not several billions of people among the general public who believe there is no danger to human health from the microwave radiation being emitted by the wireless devices and applications that they use daily.

Swiss Government Wants to Measure Electrosmog in Homes

Government Wants to Measure Electrosmog in Homes
(20min.ch - German version - 26 August 2013) (Translation from German by Google and the Editor of this blog.)

While arguing about radiation from mobile phone antennas, no one knows how strongly we are irradiated in the office and at home. Now the federal government will look into a new measurement system.

Mobile phones, shavers, PC’s, lamps, Wi-Fi: these are continuously irradiating in the bedroom, the living room and the office. Electrosensitive persons are certain that they are getting headaches, balance and sleep disorders from this.

Although research is divided on whether these symptoms actually stem from electrosmog, it has been scientifically proven that certain radiation heats up the body and can affect the nervous system. But not even the federal government knows how much radiation exposure there actually is in Swiss homes and offices.

Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) and Lipitor - 2

by Duane Graveline, M.D., MPH, People’s Pharmacy, 24 July 2013

(from 1997 through May 15, 2012)

FDA has opened the shelves of MedWatch to those of us wishing to review for ourselves the status of statin adverse drug reports (ADRs). This has been all the more imperative since FDA has been extremely reluctant to report side effect data on the statin class of drugs.

I was last able to access MedWatch data in 2006. Following that, in the beginning of 2007, my access to MedWatch data was denied despite legal pressure from my lawyers. Even in 2006 the process had not been easy, for it meant I had to tackle the immense challenge of reviewing manually some 64,000 Lipitor ADRs using the "find" mechanism on my PC. This was necessary, I was told, since the appropriate software for reading MedWatch data was available only to FDA and drug company officials. The rest of us had to be content with the time-honored and accurate but painfully slow process of counting each case one by one using the search mechanism on our PC.

Statins and Transient Global Amnesia - 1

Dr. Duane Graveline, aerospace
medical research scientist
Dr. Duane E. Graveline was a family doctor, aerospace medical research scientist, USAF flight surgeon and NASA astronaut. Dr. Graveline interned at the famed Walter Reed Army hospital. He became a flight surgeon and did space medical research on zero gravity deconditioning. He held a unique position as medical analyst of the Soviet bioastronautics program, NASA flight controller and finally, in 1965, was selected as a NASA scientist astronaut. Dr. Graveline still is affiliated with the space program as consultant to the special cosmic radiation hazards to man of "return to the moon and on to Mars."

In his article, he delivers a personal testimony of his experience of transient global amnesia (TGA) when taking the statin Lipitor (atorvastatin). Pfizer, the manufacturer of Lipitor, estimates that 35 million persons are now taking this drug.  Dr. Graveline believes this is the reason for “an epidemic of statin-associated TGA” in the United States since 1999. “Everyone should be aware that any statin could cause TGA or interfere with cognitive function,” he writes.

"Proceedings of the Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection: from Chernobyl to Fukushima" (Geneva, 12-13 May 2013) Now Available Online

Proceedings of IW “Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection – Now on line
Independent WHO, 22 June 2013

We are pleased to announce the online publication of the English-language version of the “Proceedings of the Scientific and Citizen Forum on Radioprotection: from Chernobyl to Fukushima,” a conference which was organized on 12 and 13 May 2012 in Geneva by the Collective IndependentWHO – Health and Nuclear Energy. A printed version of the Proceedings will be available in mid-July.

The Forum brought together independent scientists and citizens from Belarus, Russia, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Japan, as well as politicians and journalists. As participants demonstrated, the scandal of the omerta on the effects of radiation on health continues, more than two years after the beginning of the Fukushima disaster on 11 March 2011. There are more and more sick people in the affected areas, including children. Citizens, Japanese doctors and independent scientists are obliged to organize in the face of the shortcomings of the authorities and international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), which is still subject to the agreement that it signed with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 28 May 1959.

This message has just been posted on the MSN site, the original source of this information: "CORRECTION:  A post on a website in Japan reports that these images aren’t related to the Fukushima disaster. We regret passing along the misinformation." We leave it to readers to decide for themselves or do more research.  It could also be that pro-nuclear countries are trying to spread misinformation by denying the truth.

See also these photos from a South Korean Website - can anyone verify that these are from the Fukushima area after the nuclear catastrophe?

Fukushima: Disturbing Transformations of Vegetables, Fruits, Flowers, and Animals Exposed to Radiation
published by Jérémy Garandeau, gentside.com, 16 July 2013
(translated from French by the Editor of this blog)

On 11 March 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant liberated radioactive particles following the earthquake in eastern Japan. Today, the first consequences of this exposure have been noticed especially in fruits and vegetables, and also in some flowers and animals.

This ear of corn has
an abnormal shape.
On 11 March 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in eastern Japan did not resist the earthquake which took place a few hours earlier off the coast, provoking a tsunami. The automatic shutdown of the reactors in operation caused a freeing of nuclear particles, forming a cloud. If the Japanese Government ensured that all was under control in the days that followed this catastrophe, nature was seriously affected by the incident. Vegetables as well as animals would bear the consequences of this exposure to radiation, as relays the American site, MSN.
