Switzerland: Electrosmog Exposure: Are We Preparing the Way for the Next Disease of Civilization?

Memorial to the insatiable hunger for data:
a mobile phone antenna
Swimming in a sea of rays
by Jürg Steiner, Berner Zeitung, 22 December 2013 (translated from German by Google and the Editor of this blog)

We are sending ever faster and bigger data packets through our mobile and wireless network. We are doing so through electromagnetic radiation. Are we preparing the way for the next disease of civilization?

Casting WLAN networks like fishing nets, the Spitalgasse in Bern would be impassable. From the street, via a smartphone, one can locate dozens of pulsating wireless screens within a confined area. There are no benefits but everyone is irradiated, also by the mobile antenna covering the city center at full strength.

In the train, the same picture: from left and right, pulsating electromagnetic waves from private phones and laptops, while travelling through the sea of rays of the mobile phone network.

That year, the engineer discovered he was “electrosensitive”. Suddenly, Wi-Fi, cell phones, tablets and even the vacuum cleaner, drill and sewing machine made his existence hell. Since then, he lives in a “permanent building site” in order to better protect himself against electromagnetic waves.

Multiple Infant Vaccines Linked to Dramatically Increased Mortality

Multiple Infant Vaccines Linked To Dramatically Increased Mortality
by Sayer Ji, Founder, greenmedinfo.com,
19 December 2013

A new study published in the journal Vaccine has brought to light an extremely disturbing though still virtually unreported dark side to immunization campaigns within low-income countries, namely, the observation that infant mortality sometimes increases when the number of co-administered vaccines increases; a finding diametrically opposed to the widely held belief that vaccination is always a life-saving intervention, and that the more vaccines administered to infants the better.
New Study Links DTP and Yellow Fever Vaccines To Infant Deaths

The new observational study from the West African country Guinea-Bissau titled, "Co-administration of live measles and yellow fever vaccines and inactivated pentavalent vaccines is associated with increased mortality compared with measles and yellow fever vaccines only,"[i] opens with a reference to the already consistent observation in the biomedical literature that the co-administration of inactivated diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccine and live attenuated measles vaccine (MV)increases mortality compared with receiving MV only. Why the Amish Don’t Get Sick: Things You Can Learn From Them
lahealthyliving.com, 15 December, 2013

When we think of Amish people we think of a simple life, free of modern advancements. Most of us view them as foolish for not using the advantages of convenient technology and even look down on them for not conforming to the norms of mainstream society. But if we look at the statistics, the Amish are much healthier than the rest of America. They virtually have no cancer, no autism, and rarely get sick. What are they doing different from the rest of America? Let’s look at some of the things they are doing different (here).
Why the Amish Don’t Get Sick

The Amish have chosen the traditional wisdom of our ancestors over our “modern” way of living. They live by the practices of past generations.

How the Industry Embarked on a Strategy to Give Chrysotile Asbestos a Clean Bill of Health - Part 2

Sergey Kashansky, pro-asbestos
Russian government official
The anatomy of deadly product defence campaigns
by Rory O’Neill, Editor, Hazards, December 2013

3. Get your man on the inside

Lies and lobbying have their limits. If critical opposition from global health bodies was to be contained, the industry needed someone on the inside. And it pulled it off. In 2013, the World Health Organisation’s cancer agency, IARC, appointed Sergey Kashansky, a pro-asbestos Russian government official, as a collaborating scientist on the IARC Asbest Study.

Outraged scientists from the US, Canada and India, including retired US Assistant Surgeon General Richard Lemen, co-authored a 12 November 2013 protest letter to IARC director-general Christopher Wild. The letter noted: “It is, in our view, a dangerous precedent and entirely unacceptable that IARC has appointed as a collaborating scientist a person who works with the asbestos industry to defeat the efforts of the WHO to protect public health by ending the use of chrysotile asbestos.”

It added: “Dr Kashansky’s involvement in the marketing efforts of the asbestos industry and the Russian government to promote export and use of asbestos represents a conflict of interest that contravenes the ethical standards that IARC is supposed to observe.”

This article on the chrysotile asbestos industry, which is alive and well, is posted in its entirety in two parts.

The anatomy of deadly product defence campaigns
by Rory O’Neill, Editor, Hazards, December 2013

Some scientific hired guns try to hide their industry ties; others flaunt them. Either way cash-for-science can be very bad news for your health. Hazards editor Rory O’Neill follows the money.

Take one deliberately undercooked cancer experiment, publish a scientific paper to promote its academically ridiculed findings, and go on a world tour to publicise its conclusions, and what do you get? In the case of Dr David Bernstein, the asbestos industry’s go-to scientist, the answer is several million dollars.

For the Switzerland-based US toxicologist, his role as the chief scientific propagandist for the asbestos industry worldwide has been as lucrative as it has been suspect.

Fisher-Price 'iPad Apptivity Seat' only the worst example (so far) of a culture awash in screens that may be harming childhood development

It's Christmas Eve in the Digital Age, but for those concerned about the growing amount of screen time that teenagers and young children—even infants—are now experiencing, the holiday gift-giving season may become an increasingly "horrifying" affair.

As the rise of technology dovetails with the multi-billion dollar toy and media industries, children are now growing up in a digital environment that may seem harmless to some but could be dramatically harming key components of their physical, mental and emotional growth at one of the most precious and fragile stages of human development.

The New York Times reports on Tuesday:

A recent survey of 1,000 parents with children between 2 and 10 found that more than half planned to buy a tech item for their children this holiday season. About two-thirds of those planned to give a tablet or smartphone, according to the survey, which was taken for PBS Kids, the brand of the public broadcasting network aimed at young children.

Katie Couric Opens Up Pandora's Box by Airing Testimony about HPV Vaccine's Lack of Effectiveness and Safety

"Ultimately, the HPV vaccine does not work as advertised, and likely never did. For those who continue to distract from this fact, resorting to assaulting the character of those like Katie Couric who provide a forum for discussing these vitally important issues, the evidence itself will only blow back on them. HPV is not the sole cause of cervical cancer, the HPV vaccine’s effectiveness is either poor or non-existent in certain populations, and reports of adverse effects continue to amass on VAERS [Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System] including death and chronic disability."

The HPV Vaccine Debate: Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

by Sayer Ji, Contributing Writer for Wake Up World, 18 December 2013

Katie Couric opened up a Pandora’s box of sorts simply by airing testimony about the HPV vaccine’s lack of effectiveness and safety, but shouldn’t she be commended for asking questions the mainstream media is afraid to touch?

We live in a time when simply questioning the safety and effectiveness of vaccines has become, in the eyes of the mainstream media and conventional medical establishment, an unconscionable act. With high-profile figures like Bill Gates stating that those who engage in “anti-vaccine efforts … kill children,” and global health organizations like UNICEF immodestly spying on independent health sites (and their visitors) who they allege spread misinformation and “anti-vaccine sentiment,” the increasing inquisitiveness about vaccines among the public and research community alike has become the object of a modern day Inquisition.

Carl Sagan on Science and Technology

And here is what Carl Sagan says about the media in the United States.
(Ref. Media Matters for America)
A Science Icon Died 17 Years Ago. In His Last Interview, He Made A Warning That Gives Me Goosebumps.
by Rajiv Narayan, upworthy.com

Carl Sagan inspired a generation of scientists with his work in and out of the classroom. But he didn't always present science with cheer. In this clip, he passionately defends science with a grave warning. It's something we all need to hear.

Extract from an Interview with Charlie Rose, 27 May 1996  (text transcribed by the editor of this blog)

Sagan: …We live in an age based on science and technology with formidable technological powers.

Rose: Science and technology are propelling us forward at accelerating rates.

Sagan: That’s right, and if we don’t understand it, by “we” I mean the general public - “ if it’s something I’m not good at, I don’t know anything about” – then, who’s making all the decisions about science and technology that are going to determine what kind of future our children live in? Just some members of Congress? But there is no more than a handful of members of Congress with any background in science at all and the Republican Congress has just abolished its own office of technology assessment, the organization that gave them bipartisan competent advice on science and technology. “We don’t want to know. Don’t tell us about science and technology.”

Wireless Radiation Standards Essential to Prevent Cancer, Other Harm

Wireless Radiation Standards Essential To Prevent Cancer, Other Harm, Speakers Say
by Joyce E. Cutler, BNA/Bloomberg / Electromagnetic Radiation Safety, 10 December, 2013

Radiation standards for wireless devices including phones and tablet computers are essential and long overdue to prevent further damage to children and fetuses, cancer doctors and activists said Dec. 9 in urging that the Federal Communications Commission implement policies adopted in other countries to reduce exposures.

In a Commonwealth Club of California event, specialists in breast cancer, neurology, pathology and radiation said information on specific absorption rates (SARs) from the two-way microwave radio carried by 6.8 billion people worldwide must be readily provided and explained to consumers with warnings about the impacts of radiation on developing bodies.

Cancer Alert? Make Your Bra a 'No Phone Zone'

Cancer Alert? Make Your Bra a 'No Phone Zone'
by Lorie Johnson, CBN News Medical Reporter, cbn.com (Christian Broadcasting Network),
12 December 2013

Cell phones and cancer. It's a connection that's been discussed for years, but we still don't know for sure if there's an association.

But one possibility does appear to exist, at least among some women. It all depends on where they carry their phone.

Convenient Storage

Millions of women, especially young ones, choose to keep their cell phone in their bra. It's convenient because it allows women to ditch their purse and remain hands-free.

Also, many womens' clothes are without pockets. So without a purse, the bra is the obvious choice for many for storage.

Neuro-Electromagnetic Frequency Weapons

"Mobile telephone systems like GSM and UMTS operate in the same frequency areas as some frequency weapons; this means that these systems... can potentially be used as a weapon, by altering the modulation of the frequencies and the direction of the signal... Directing a beam of frequencies to a human brain can cause a series of serious side-effects including nausea, headaches, and accelerated heart rate."

Neuro-Electro-magnetic Frequency Weapons
taboodata.com, 27 April 2013

Personnel Halting and Stimulation Response (PHaSR)

One of the tool used by the military in behavior modification and mind-control is the remotely operated electromagnetic frequency weapons. These weapons use microwave, ELF (Extremely Low Frequencies) and acoustics frequencies to covertly manipulate the minds of persons under attack. The use of frequency weapons upon humans toward behavioral control and murder is not new. For well over 50 years, Neuro-Electro-magnetic Frequency Weapons have been perfected by their covert use in warfare. These ‘classified’, ‘non-lethal’ or ‘silent’ weapons have also been perfected by experimenting on unsuspecting individuals since their early development. Directing a beam of frequencies to a human brain can cause a series of serious side-effects. ELF waves cause nausea, headaches, accelerated heart rate without cause, to name but a few. In 1974, the first unclassified successful transmission of the human voice directly into the skull of a living person was performed by Dr. Joseph C. Sharp, of the Walter Reed army institute of research by transforming a hypnotist’s voice using ELF’s. This technique was later developed into the Smirnov scramble method, and used in the Gulf War. It is possible to hypnotize a target without the target being aware and leaving zero trace of evidence.

Dr. Oz Says Keeping Your Cell Phone in Your Bra Can Cause Breast Cancer

UPDATE:  The 6 December episode of the Dr. Oz Show, "Why You Should Keep Your Cell Phone Out of Your Bra" is now available.  It should be viewed by everyone.  His guests include Tiffany Frantz, who at age 21 was diagnosed with breast cancer and cancer surgeon, Dr. John West.

Here in Geneva, where more and more young women are being diagnosed with breast cancer, we drew the attention of the English Speaking Cancer Association (ESCA) to this issue. Our awareness-raising was taken rather lightly.  "I personally don't know of anyone who keeps a cell phone in their bra," commented one of the group's key personnel.  Geneva's main newspaper, the Tribune de Genève, published our comment on this issue in their readers' mail column.  Dr. Monica Castiliogne-Gertsch, Director of the Center of Oncology/Breast Cancer, University Hospital of Geneva (HUG), who is also engaged in research and advocacy, has always been receptive to our communications on breast cancer and electromagnetic radiation.

Dr. Oz says women who keep their cell phones in their bras are putting themselves at risk for breast cancer.

On the Dec. 6 episode of the Dr. Oz Show ("Why You Should Keep Your Cell Phone Out of Your Bra"), Dr. Oz said he believes there is a definite link between cell phones and cancer.

"When it comes to cell phones, the bra has become the new purse," said Dr. Oz, who said millions of women are unknowingly endangering themselves for the sake of convenience.

The relationship between cell phone use, academic performance, anxiety, and Satisfaction with Life in college students

Summary and Abstract of the study to appear in the journal Computers in Human Behavior

Kent State University researchers Andrew Lepp, Ph.D., Jacob Barkley, Ph.D., and Aryn Karpinski, Ph.D., all faculty members in the university's College of Education, Health and Human Services, surveyed more than 500 university students. Daily cell phone use was recorded along with a clinical measure of anxiety and each student's level of satisfaction with their own life, or in other words happiness. Finally, all participants allowed the researchers to access their official university records in order to retrieve their actual, cumulative college grade point average (GPA). All students surveyed were undergraduate students and were equally distributed by class (freshman, sophomore, junior and senior). In addition, 82 different, self-reported majors were represented.

Electrohypersensitivity (EHS): Biomarkers

EHS Biomarkers

It has been known since 2002 that our bodies react to non-thermal EMF exposure without our conscious awareness. This makes the flawed subjective psychological tests (can you feel the cell phone radiation now?) much less relevant.

The following are biomarkers that medical doctors in Europe, Russia, Canada and the United States are using to diagnose electro-hypersensitivity (EHS). If you are experiencing the common symptoms of EHS, you can bring the following to the attention of your medical doctor. Also bring him/her a copy of this book, which provides a more detailed description of the common EHS biomarkers, along with an intro letter from a medical doctor that is also electro-sensitive.

Alzheimer's Disease

Article reposted:  The U.S. site “Alzheimer Disease Research” says that 5.4 million persons over age 65 in the United States have AD.  By 2050, this figure could increase to 15 million.  One person is diagnosed with AD every 69 seconds.  Almost half a million persons have so far been diagnosed with the disease in 2011.  It is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S.    The national cost of care and treatment in 2011 is estimated to be $183 billion and by 2050, could reach $1.1 trillion.  35.6 million persons in the world were living with AD in 2010.  The known risk factors are genetics and age.  “Potential contributing factors” are cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, oxidative damage, inflammation, prior traumatic head injury, lower educational level, female gender.  The U.S. National Institutes of Health site mentions  risk factors as “some mix of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors”.

The book, “Menace of our Neurons”, published in 2011 and currently available only in French, devotes an entire chapter to Alzheimer’s disease which is as extensive and as costly in France per population as in the United States.  The book, written by Marie Grosman, specialist in public and environmental health, and Roger Lenglet, philosopher and investigative journalist, is the result of a 15-year enquiry into diseases which affect the brain and nervous system and their links to the environment.  The book also explores how industry (pharmaceutical, agro-food, insurance) profits from these diseases.

The chapter devoted to AD is about the authors' visit to the « Alzheimer Train ».  What they discovered about AD could apply to other diseases such as cancer :  the domination of industry profit to the neglect of our health;  the denial of consideration of the real causes of the disease, lack of true prevention;  a conspiracy of silence regarding information destined for the public;  ineffectiveness of medical treatment, especially in the case of AD.

The Story Behind the Plan to Retract Gilles-Eric Séralini's Study on Rats Fed GMO and non-GMO Corn Treated with Monsanto's Roundup

Richard E. Goodman
by Claire Robinson and Jonathan Latham, PhD, Independent Science News, 20 May 2013

Richard Smith, former editor of the British Medical Journal, has jested that instead of scientific peer review, its rival The Lancet had a system of throwing a pile of papers down the stairs and publishing those that reached the bottom. On another occasion, Smith was challenged to publish an issue of the BMJ exclusively comprising papers that had failed peer review and see if anybody noticed. He replied, “How do you know I haven’t already done it?”

As Smith’s stories show, journal editors have a lot of power in science – power that provides opportunities for abuse. The life science industry knows this, and has increasingly moved to influence and control science publishing.

Denmark: Citizen Initiative for Protection Against Radiation from Wireless Technologies

This Committee, established by a group of Danes, aims, in cooperation with human rights lawyer Christian Harlang, to clarify whether there is a breach of the Nuremberg Code - including experimentation on humans without informed consent;  whether the United Nations children's convention is violated. (Articles 3, 17, 24, 25 and Article 32);  and establish who is legally liable for the possible consequences of the exposure of the public and any violations of the Conventions.

Shhh Apple Doesn't Really Want You to Know This About iPads

iPads are not toys but people unknowingly give them to children as if they are. It is important that people are made aware of the fact that an iPad's peak radiation level is much higher than that of a cellphone. iPads should not be placed on the body because of the multiple antennas located inside; nor should they be used for hours because the longer the exposure to radio frequency radiation the more damage that can occur.

Schools throughout the United States and other countries are giving children iPads in classrooms without adhering to these instructions.

Shhh Apple doesn't really want you to know this about iPads

Center for Safer Wireless, 27 November 2013

Have you read the instructions that came with your iPad? If you haven't, you are not alone. Most people including school administrators and teachers don't read the tiny words that are written on the instruction booklet. Not wanting to sound suspicious - well maybe just a little - but Apple isn't doing its best to provide you with the information you need to use the iPad safely. IPads must be held a certain way or they exceed the FCC regulations. Read the information below that is in the booklet.

From Digital Media to Digital Dementia

A recent article in a Swiss newspaper on e-courses shows
children using laptops on their laps, exposing sensitive
parts of their bodies to electromagnetic radiation.

Experts warn that digital media is detrimental to learning and can cause insomnia, depression, addiction, and many physical illnesses concerning the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal system (lack of exercise, incorrect sitting posture), up to dementia.  Switzerland is moving towards providing school children with tablets and organizing courses on digital media for parents, children and educators, with little mention of health risks.

Psychiatrist and brain researcher Manfred Spitzer warns parents and educators

The neuroscientist and medical director of the Psychiatric University Hospital Ulm, Professor Manfred Spitzer, met with intense press coverage about his new best-seller “Digitale Demenz. Wie wir uns und unsere Kinder um den Verstand bringen” (Digital dementia. How we drive us and our children mad) and his trenchant theses. Referring to many neurological findings and supplementing new findings Spitzer reinforces in his book previous research of reputable media experts saying that the too frequent use of the Internet can make people dumb. He never denigrated juvenile and adult Internet users however. Reacting to the spiteful attacks by the press, he said in an interview: “I do not pathologize but I state: Where there are effects there are also risks and side effects.”1 However, Spitzer does not just express warnings; he also shows what parents, teachers and politicians can do to protect our youth.

19 Signs You Need To Unplug From Your Smartphone
by Lindsay Holmes, The Huffington Post,
23 November 2013

Are you attached to your digital devices? If the thought of being disconnected makes you sweat, you're not alone. Americans are spending more time than ever with their screens, logging an average of more than five hours per day.

So how do you curb your addiction? Fukushima Fallout Damaged Thyroid Glands of California Babies

Fukushima fallout damaged thyroid glands of California babies
by Chris Busby, The Ecologist,
19 November 2013

A new study finds that radioactive Iodine from Fukushima has caused a significant increase in hypothyroidism among babies in California, 5,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean.

The Fukushima catastrophe has been dismissed as a potential cause of health effects even in Japan, let alone as far away as California.

A new study of the effects of tiny quantities of radioactive fallout from Fukushima on the health of babies born in California shows a significant excess of hypothyroidism caused by the radioactive contamination travelling 5,000 miles across the Pacific. The article will be published next week in the peer-reviewed journal Open Journal of Pediatrics.

Congenital hypothyroidism is a rare but serious condition normally affecting about one child in 2,000, and one that demands clinical intervention - the growth of children suffering from the condition is affected if they are left untreated. All babies born in California are monitored at birth for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels in blood, since high levels indicate hypothyroidism.

Switzerland: Is Wi-Fi in Schools Making Children Sick?

Is Wi-Fi in schools making children sick?
by Hannes von Wyl, 20min.ch, 21 November 2013  (Translated from German by Google and the Editor of this blog)
From 2015, elementary school students will already be working with mobile phones and tablets - over WLAN (Wi-Fi)  connected to the Internet. Critics warn of health problems and even leukemia and tumors.

(Photo: Tablets and mobile phones in the classroom: from 2015/16 this should be the standard. Because the devices can only be connected wirelessly to the Internet, the schools will be equipped with Wi-Fi. According to critics, irradiation from the radio waves results in lack of concentration and more cases of ADHD and cancer.)

According to Curriculum 21, which should be implemented in all German-speaking schools in Switzerland from the school year 2015/2016, children will learn how to use new media technologies in kindergarten and in primary school. Due to the proliferation of tablets and smartphones, not only computers and notebooks, but also "small mobile devices", will be taken into account.

Swiss Re on "Unforeseen Consequences of Electromagnetic Fields"

Excerpt from recent Swiss Re document on the unforeseen consequences of electromagnetic fields (page 11).  (Swiss Re is one of the world's largest reinsurance companies.)

Swiss Re Sonar – Emerging Risk Insights
July 2013

Unforeseen consequences of electromagnetic fields
(high risk - more than 10 years)

The ubiquity of electromagnetic fields (EMF) raises concerns about potential implications for human health, in particular with regard to the use of mobile phones, power lines or antennas for broadcasting. Over the last decade, the spread of wireless devices has accelerated enormously. The convergence of mobile phones with computer technology has led to the proliferation of new and emerging technologies.  This development has increased exposure to electromagnetic fields, the health impacts of which remain unknown.

Anxiety over the potential risks related to EMF has risen. Studies are difficult to conduct, since time trend studies are inconsistent due to the still rather recent proliferation of wireless technology. The WHO has classified extremely low-frequency magnetic fields and radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, such as radition emitted by cell phones, as potentially carcinogenic to humans (Class 2B carcinogen). Furthermore, a recent ruling by an Italian court suggested a link between mobile phone radiation and human health impairment. Overall, however, scientific studies are still inconclusive regarding possible adverse health effects of EMF.

If a direct link between EMF and human health problems were established, it would open doors for new claims and could ultimately lead to large losses under product liability covers. Liability rates would likely rise.

Interview with the Author of « Big Pharma, An All-powerful Industry that Toys with Our Health »

I am currently reading "Big Pharma", a very revealing book about the ways in which the pharmaceutical industry is toying with our health.  The Nouvel Observateur interviewed the author, Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen, on the parts of the book about the drug "misinformation" on the Internet and environmental pollution of medications. (The book is not yet available in English.)

"For information on health, the Internet is completely unreliable"
by Anne Crignon , Nouvel Observateur , 29 September 2013 (translated from French by the Editor of this blog)

Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen publishes "Big Pharma". Interview.

Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen, 20 July, at his home in Paris, the day he finished "Big Pharma". Born in 1951 of Danish parents, MIKKEL BORCH-JACOBSEN grew up in Strasbourg and studied philosophy in France, where he defended his doctoral thesis before a jury which included Derrida, Levinas and Lacoue-Labarthe. He left for the United States in 1986, where he currently teaches literature at the University of Washington in Seattle.

In "Big Pharma", Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen… has asked a group of Anglo-Saxon authors to refine his study of a milieu that he has been scrutinizing for the past ten years: the pharmaceutical industry.

BibliObs: There is a debate in France. Some believe that we are now in an era of medical misinformation or manipulation by prescribers, scientific knowledge being "in the hands of” drug manufacturers; and those who complain are often perceived as Manichaean accusers. Has medical knowledge been corrupted?

Texting Becoming a Pain in the Neck

This child is too young to be using
a cell phone!
Youngsters may face a 'healthcare time bomb' of neck and back pain linked to the use of computers, video games and smartphones.

Texting Becoming a Pain in the Neck
University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC),
26 February 2013

Dr. Chris Cornett, orthopedic surgeon, spine specialist says excessive leaning head forward and down, while looking at a phone or other mobile device could result in what some people call “text neck.”

Newswise — In today’s technology-thirsty society, it’s rare to not see someone with their head down texting on their cell phone or reading the latest status updates on Facebook.

However, too much texting and tilting your head down can become a pain in the neck for some people. An excessive amount of leaning your head forward and down, while looking at a phone or other mobile device could result in what some people call “text neck.”People get so focused on these devices that they end up holding their neck and upper back in abnormal positions for a long period of time; enough that other people coined the phrase ‘text neck,’ which is essentially referring to postural pain,” said Chris Cornett, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon and spine specialist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation.

New Guidelines for Cholesterol Treatments Represent "Huge Change"

One of the reasons behind the new guidelines may be the fact that all but one of the currently approved statins have come off patent, so the cost of the medications has plummeted; a three-month supply can cost as little as $10.  Drug companies thus need to maintain their revenues by other means.  Following this article from Time, there is a partial list of pharmaceutical and other companies which contribute to the American Heart Association.  The British Medical Journal (BMJ) has just published an article entitled, "Majority of panelists on controversial new cholesterol guideline have current or recent ties to drug manufacturers", summary available here.

New Guidelines for Cholesterol Treatments Represent “Huge Change”
by Alice Park @aliceparkny, Time.com, 12 November 2013

New guidelines would double the number of Americans on cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN wondered on Twitter whether we are “waving the white flag” when it comes to helping Americans avoid heart disease. Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist and chief academic officer of Scripps Health, tweeted that the doubling of patients on statins, which can lower cholesterol by up to 50%, was “not good.”

But the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology remained convinced that the 2002 federal recommendations for when to start people on the drugs needed to be updated. About 33% of U. S. adults have high cholesterol, and less than half are receiving proper treatment, despite the fact that elevated cholesterol levels double the risk of heart disease, the number one killer of adults in the U.S.

Major Swiss Department Store Advertises "Toxic" Tablets for Children from Age 3 in Their Christmas Catalog : Letter to Manor and Their Reply

We have now received a reply from Manor which does not exactly address the points raised in our letter. Swiss law, unlike the Belgian laws to come into effect in March 2014, allows advertising tablets and cell phones to very young children, under 7 years old. We doubt that all parents responsibly read and adhere to the safety instructions in the manuals. We also have some doubts about working conditions in certain factories in China, for example, we are still reading that conditions have not improved that much in some of the factories contracted by Apple. Finally, the Swiss Federal Office for Public Health continues to deny that use of wireless technologies, especially by young children, carries health risks.

Reply from Manor (translated from French by the Editor of this blog.)

Dear Madam,

Your letter dated 6 November 2013 has received our full attention. We would ask you to take note of our position, set out below.

Tablets for children are provided for personalization by parents. It is thus recommended to block certain Internet content, to introduce a time limit on use, etc. Thanks to these different measures which are easy to program, parents can ensure that their children respect their will and safety instructions.

Using a Tablet Can Cause Toddlers Long-Term Health Problems

Research commissioned by Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board suggests youngsters face a 'healthcare time bomb' of neck and back pain linked to the use of computers, video games and smartphones.

New guidelines from the American Academy of Paediatrics state children should not be allowed more than two hours screen time a day. They also say children under the age of two should not spend any time in front of a screen. Finally, the guidelines suggest televisions, tablets and computers should be kept out of children’s rooms.

Toddlers who use tablets or smartphones may develop long-term problems with their hands and fingers, experts warn

When children use touchscreens they are not building up muscles needed for writing - which means they suffer from decreased muscle strength

As touchscreens are new, no one knows what health consequences will be

New guidelines suggest toddlers should not be allowed to use them at all

Parents who let their toddlers play with iPads could be damaging their hands and fingers, an expert has warned.

French Documentary Reveals How the Mobile Industry Manufactures Doubt

“[Electrosmog] will probably be the next big public health scandal because everyone is exposed. It is important that each user takes precautions to be taught to young people to use these technologies with sense.”

French Documentary Film Reveals How the Mobile Industry Manufactures DoubtPosted by SkyVision Solutions,
12 November 2013

With their documentary “Ondes, Science et Manigances” [or "Waves, Science and Shenanigans (Intrigue)"], the journalist Nancy Meritens and film director Jean Hèches show how the mobile industry creates doubt about harmful radiofrequency waves.

Faced with the construction of a telephone relay antenna in front of their homes and anxious to know if they were at risk for their health, these two people have traveled Europe to understand the environmental issues presented by this technology.

Through interviews with several whistleblowers, including citizens, journalists, and scientists, this film reveals how, like the tobacco industry, the lobby of the mobile phone industry has built a strategy of “product defense” by artificially creating a scientific doubt about the harmful effects of electromagnetic waves.

Digital Dementia: Guidelines for Educators Regarding Technology Use in School Settings

"Continued use of non-evidenced-based technologies in school settings could be considered an unprecedented experiment of epic proportion, one which may result in pervasive illiteracy in a whole generation of children... Families with technology addictions are already seeking professional help, as soon will be whole schools."

This article is excellent.

Digital Dementia – Guidelines for educators regarding technology use in school settings
by Cris Rowan, movingtolearn.ca, 10 September 2013

Mounting research indicates unrestricted use of technology (cell phones, internet, TV) by children is resulting in negative impact on physical and mental health, social wellbeing, and academic performance, suggesting a cautionary approach toward the use of technology in school settings. As rates of technology addiction soar, children and youth are presenting with problematic behaviours and disorders that are not well understood by health and education professionals. Obesity, developmental delay, sleep deprivation, anxiety, depression, aggression, social phobia, and inability to pay attention or learn, are all associated with technology overuse bringing into question “Are the ways in which we are educating and raising children with technology sustainable”? This article will profile recent research on the impact of education technology on attention and learning, review technology evaluation and screening tools, and propose school-based technology guidelines and interventions to achieve Balanced Technology Management in education settings.

Cholesterol Lowering Statins Found to Damage Peripheral Nerves

Extract from Abstract of study published in Journal of Diabetes, June 2013: “Peripheral neuropathy is a serious complication of diabetes and several conditions that may lead to the loss of lower extremity function and even amputations. Since the introduction of statins, their use has increased markedly. Recent reports suggest a role for statins in the development of peripheral neuropathy.”

Cholesterol Lowing Statins Found To Damage Peripheral Nerves

Have the nerve-damaging properties of statin drugs now been confirmed? There are over 300 adverse health effects associated with the use of this chemical class of cholesterol-lowering medications known as statins, with myotoxicity (muscle-damaging) and neurotoxicity (nerve-damaging) top on the list. When will the FDA step in and warn the public, as proof of the problem in the biomedical literature reaches an alarming level of clarity?

The neurotoxicity of statin drugs are back in the news. Following on the heels of the FDA decision earlier this year to require statin drugs manufacturers to add "memory loss" as a side effect of this chemical class, a new study in published in the Journal of Diabetes reveals a clear association between statin use and peripheral neuropathy in a US population 40 years of age and older.

Electrosensitivity Finally Recognized as a Disease?

Electrosensitivity finally recognized as a disease ?
by Philippe Samzun, lanouvellerepublique.fr, 5 November 2013 (translated from French by the Editor of this blog)

Electrosensitive for more than 10 years, a person from the Touraine region has just been acknowledged as a disabled worker. Testimony.

A graphics designer in Tours, Véronika has just been acknowledged as a disabled worker by the Departmental Home for Handicapped Persons (MDPH) because of her electrosensitivity. “A first in Indre-et-Loire and without doubt in the Central Region,” says Emmanual Denis, departmental delegate for the association Robin des Toits.

Aged 56, this person from the Touraine region has been able to avail herself of a medical certificate dating from last April, issued by a physician in Nantes, specialized in professional and environmental pathologies.

An impaired social and professional life

Dr. Dominique Dupas indicates that Véronika “presents a clinical picture wholly characteristic of an idiopathic environmental intolerance to electromagnetic fields.” He adds that this condition, which belongs to the group of medically unexplained diseases, is very disabling for social and professional life. “Patients with this condition present difficulties of access to or keeping a job such that they justify in my view the attribution of handicapped worker,” concludes the physician.

« Conditions are not completely perfect, but are quite ideal and very favorable for setting up something.” Pierre Le Ruz, President of Criirem (Center for Independent Research and Information on Electromagnetic Radiation), is quite satisfied. Since Tuesday, he has made a number of measurements on the site of Durbon where the Euro-Deputy (Europe Ecology The Greens) Michèle Rivasi wished to establish a white zone destined for electrohypersensitive persons (EHS). “It is a very important project. No white zone exists in France, or even in Europe, while where are more and more EHS persons,” the Euro-Deputy explained yesterday during a press conference to present the project.

Food & Water Watch, a consumer rights group, studied fracking counties to determine some of the other, more social downsides to inviting gas companies into their backyards.  The group concluded that “the fracking boom has transformed some rural communities into modern versions of Wild West mining towns.”  The downsides include: housing crises, greater reliance on public assistance, traffic jams, truck accidents, alcoholism, and increased crime, sexual assault, and sexually transmitted diseases.

8 More Problems with Fracking (Aside from the Obvious)
by Kevin Mathews, care2.com, 27 September 2013

By now, we’ve all heard about the pitfalls of fracking: it hurts the environment, it ruins the water supply, it damages the health of local residents. Though those reasons should be enough to stop the practice, local communities continue to permit natural gas companies to drill on their land.

The One-Billion Euro Human Brain Project Relocates to Geneva

Plans to build dedicated premises in Lausanne, Switzerland, for the prestigious Human Brain Project (HBP) have been scrapped, and the research is to be headquartered in an already existing building in Geneva… The HBP brings together over 130 research institutions from Europe and around the world, and in January was awarded one of the European Union’s Flagship grants, worth more than €1 billion ($1.35 billion) over the next ten years. Half of the money will come from the EU, and the rest from the countries to which the research institutions belong as well as from business… The HBP aims to build a working computer model of the human brain by 2023. Once it has mapped the brain, it will simulate drugs and treatments for neurological diseases and related ailments... Some scientists have reservations about the project;  one comments that we do not know enough about brain processes or structures to produce models of this sort.

Neuroscientists count on technology evolution
by Simon Bradley, swissinfo.ch, 28 October 2013

The Human Brain Project (HBP) – a bold international venture to build a working computer model of the human brain by 2023 – was launched in Lausanne this month amid much pomp. What has to be done in order for the ambitious goals to be met?

With over 130 research institutions from Europe and around the world on board, hundreds of scientists from a myriad of fields more rapidly being recruited and a budget of €1.2 billion (CHF1.2 billion) - half funded by the European Union - the HBP and its research teams are up and running with big ambitions.

What the Cancer Industry Does Not Want You to Know About Chemotherapy and Radiation

Cut, poison, burn:  are these the only acceptable
ways to treat cancer?
What The Cancer Industry Does Not Want You To Know About Chemotherapy and Radiation
by Dave Mihalovic, Guest Writer for Wake Up World, 30 October 2013

They tell us chemotherapy saves lives, boosts long-term survival rates and does not damage healthy cells. All these statements by the cancer industry are false. Poison kills indiscriminately — always has and always will. While damaging healthy cells, chemotherapy also triggers them to secrete a protein that sustains tumour growth and resistance to further treatment. That’s right…chemotherapy will actually boost cancer growth and cancer treatment is the leading cause of secondary cancers.

Vaccines, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and therapies, dentistry, psychiatry and practically all medical research is an industry and driver of corporate profits. The cancer industry is particularly ironic because the products that cause many cancers are made by divisions of the same multi-national corporations whose subsidiaries make the scanners and equipment that is used to diagnose cancers, the drugs used in chemotherapy and those given to prevent the cancer returning.

In what reality do we live in when cut, poison and burn are the only ways acceptable to treat cancer?

The cancer industry destroys or marginalizes safe and effective cures while promoting their patented, expensive, and toxic remedies that do more harm than good.

Breast Cancer Epidemic Still Raging After 30 Years of "Awareness" and Pink Ribbons

Think Before You Pink: Toxic Time Is Up
by Annie Sartor, MsMagazine.com, 24 October 2013

Why is the breast cancer epidemic still raging after 30 years of “awareness” and pink ribbons?

Each year, corporations pack the shelves with pink-ribbon products, surrounding us with “breast cancer awareness” messages. These products help to raise billions of dollars in the name of breast cancer, yet more than 40,000 women in the U.S. still die of the disease every year. And many corporations sell pink-ribbon products that actually contain chemicals linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. At Breast Cancer Action, we call this blatant hypocrisy “pinkwashing.”

American Academy of Pediatriacs Urges Parents to Limit Children's Screen Time

Pediatricians should be asking parents about their children’s screen time because too much time using mobile devices adversely affects health.  The American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending parents limit the amount of total entertainment screen time -- television, movies, video games, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. -- to one to two hours a day.

Forget TV! iPhones and iPads dazzle babies
by Kelly Wallace, CNN, 30 October 2013

(CNN) -- When I had my first daughter more than seven years ago, I was adamant: no TV until she was 2 years old and limited exposure after that.

As a reporter, I had done enough stories on children and screen time, and knew full well that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for babies under 2.

Then my second child came along, and I found myself, like so many moms, struggling to entertain my 18-month-old while nursing my newborn. Yes, that is when we discovered "Dora the Explorer."

There were no iPads then. If there were, I most definitely would have let my older daughter spend time on one while I took care of her sister, and we would have had plenty of company, according to a new study.

Japanese Government About to Pass National Censorship Law, Curtailing Public Access to Information, Including on the Fukushima Nuclear Crisis

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government is planning a state secrets act that critics say could curtail public access to information on a wide range of issues, including tensions with China and the Fukushima nuclear crisis.  "The fate of the Earth may now hang at the mercy of a... far-right government intent on blacking out that site."

Robert Stone Must Now Film Fukushima
by Harvey Wasserman, EcoWatch,
29 October 2013

We are in desperate need of documentary filmmakers at Fukushima. The Japanese government is about to pass a national censorship law clearly meant to make it impossible to know what’s going on there.

Massive quantities of radioactive water have been flowing through the site since the March, 2011 earthquake/tsunami. A thousand flimsy tanks still hold thousands of tons more of radioactive water which would pour into the Pacific should they collapse.

An earthquake and two typhoons have have just hit there, flushing still more radioactive water into the sea.
