UPDATE on Atorvastatin (Generic Lipitor) Recall: Where did Contaminated Atorvastatin Come From?

Where Did Contaminated Atorvastatin Come From?
People's Pharmacy, 27 November 2012

By now you no doubt know that a generic formulation of Lipitor (atorvastatin) made by the Indian company Ranbaxy was contaminated with small glass particles. The company announced its recall last week and we were among the first to report on it. Here is a link to our initial story about the Ranbaxy recall of atorvastatin.

What was not available until a few days ago was information about where the problem atorvastatin was actually made. Ranbaxy has manufacturing plants in at least eight countries including India and the U.S. This Indian company is now owned in large part by a Japanese company (following the money trail gets complicated) and exports drugs to over 100 countries around the world.

Wireless Technology in Schools in Switzerland

High-tech facilities are invading
private schools
Letter of the Day published in the « Courrier des lecteurs », 24 Heures, 26 November 2012 :

An Example to Follow to Protect Our Children

Re article entitled, « Technology in school, an evolution which divides », 24 Heures, 13 November 2012

Wireless facilities « are invading » private schools, while the public sector in [canton] Vaud is hesitating. Maybe there are other reasons for the resistance of public schools to information technology. The electromagnetic emissions from wireless technology, classified as possibly carcinogenic by the World Health Organization, have numerous consequences for the health of children. Among other risks, Wi.Fi can affect masculine fertility and cause various neurological troubles in children. Do we want to expose our children to this radiation all week long for years?

What's in the Food We Import from China?

T.F. News, May 2012
More and more food products imported by the West are coming from China. There is lax monitoring of these products, leaving people prone to food intoxication. China uses excessive amounts of toxic pesticides for crops and of antibiotics for animals, sometimes coupled with a complete lack of scruples. Inspections by the European Union that have been carried out have found an array of less-than-desirable substances in food imports from China: potatoes infested with insects, antibiotic-laced rabbit meat and shrimp, glass chips among pumpkin seeds, oyster sauce containing staphylococcus and pasta with maggots.

What’s in the Food We Import From China?
by Kristina Chew, Care2, 28 October 2012

In October, 11,000 children in in almost 500 schools and daycare centers across eastern Germany were sickened with diarrhea and vomiting. The norovirus that afflicted them (and sent 30 to the hospital) was traced to a shipment of frozen strawberries from China — from Qufu, a city in China’s southwestern Shandong Province where Confucius was born – and, says the German magazine Der Spiegel, led to many Germans realizing how much of their food is grown in China.

Women in Manufacturing Face Five-Fold Breast Cancer Risk

Pink-washing?  GM building in Detroit was wrapped in pink
in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
in October.  Health questions are being raised about toxic
chemicals used by suppliers of plastic parts to GM and
other automakers.

Women who work in automotive plastics and food-can manufacturing industries show nearly a five-fold increase in the incidence of breast cancer.  These workers handle carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting chemicals including bisphenol A (BPA) as well as solvents, heavy metals and flame retardants.  But industry officials in the United States and Canada attribute the increase in cancer to "lifestyle and genetic factors."   Plastics manufacturing in Canada is a $21 billion a year industry employing about 91,000 people — 60 to 80 percent of whom are women.

Italian Supreme Court Affirms Tumor Risk from Long-Term Use of a Cell Phone
Microwave News, 23 October 2012

ICEMS vs. ICNIRP; Hardell vs. Interphone

The Supreme Court of Italy has affirmed a ruling granting worker's compensation to a businessman who developed a tumor after using a cell phone for 12 years. This is the first time that a high court —in any country— has ruled in favor a link between mobile phone radiation and tumor development.

Innocente Marcolini, a financial manager at an industrial plant in Brescia in northern Italy, used cell and cordless phones for five-to-six hours a day for 12 years. Then one morning ten years ago, Marcolini, who was 50 years old at the time, sensed an unusual tingling in his chin while shaving. He was soon diagnosed as having a benign tumor on the trigeminal nerve, which controls facial muscles and sensations.

Students Thrive After College Head Bans Mobile Phones

With the mobile phone use ban at this school, reports of cyberbullying have dropped dramatically. This  ban has had a very positive effect on children at school.   A good example for schools to follow!

Students thrive as head bans mobile phones
by Telegraph reporters, 26 November 2012

Effect on pupils' learning 'dramatic' after school bans students from using mobile phones on campus.

Students at Burnage Media Arts College in Manchester are forbidden from using mobiles anywhere at any time on campus.

The ban was brought in after children disrupted lessons by texting and playing games on their phones. There were also concerns that pupils were cyber-bullying one another using texts and Blackberry messaging (BBM).

The Non-Thermal Effects of Radio Frequencies on Trees

"Photographic studies made in the Netherlands and throughout Europe has also shown a progressive increase in the occurrence of tumour-like growths beneath the bark of urban trees over the last decade or so, which corresponds in time to the increases usage of mobile phones and WiFi."

The Non-Thermal Effects of Radio Frequencies on Trees
by Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy, Lecturer in Biology (retired), Imperial College London

There is quite a lot of information on the non-thermal effects of radio frequencies on trees on the BEMRI website. See http://bemri.org/hese-uk/en/issues/nature1441.html?id=trees

What evidence is there for this? According to studies made in the 1990's on the effects of the VHF radar station at Skrunda in Latvia, the growth rings of trees were reduced during the period in which the station was operational and the pine needles made more resin (an indication of cellular stress). Incidentally, just for the record, a parallel study on the performance of schoolchildren in tests was significantly reduced in the main beam of the station compared with those in relative safety behind the antennas.

Documentary : Resonance - Beings of Frequency

The Director of the Wireless Electrical and Electromagnetic Pollution Initiative (WEEP) says this film "may be one of the most important documentaries ever produced."

Resonance - Beings of Frequency - by James Russell (1 hr. 28 min.)

RESONANCE is a sensational eye opening documentary which reveals the harm we are doing by existing in an ocean of man made wireless frequencies. Two billion years ago life first arrived on this planet; a planet, which was filled with a natural frequency. As life slowly evolved, it did so surrounded by this frequency. and inevitably, it began tuning in. By the time mankind arrived on earth an incredible relationship had been struck; a relationship that science is just beginning to comprehend. Research is showing that being exposed to this frequency is absolutely integral to us. It controls our mental and physical health, it synchronizes our circadian rhythms, and it aids our immune system and improves our sense of well-being. Not only are we surrounded by natural frequencies, our bodies are filled with them too. Our cells communicate using electromagnetic frequencies. Our brain emits a constant stream of frequencies and our DNA delivers instructions, using frequency waves. Without them we couldn't exist for more than a second. This delicate balance has taken billions of years to perfect. But over the last 25 years the harmony has been disturbed. and disturbed dramatically. Mankind has submerged itself in an ocean of artificial frequencies. They are all around us, filling the air and drowning out the earth's natural resonance. To the naked eye the planet appears to be the same. But at a cellular level it is the biggest change that life on earth has endured; the affects of which we are just starting to see and feel.

Former President of Microsoft Canada is Building a National Organization in Canada to Raise Public Awareness of the Potential Health Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation

Frank Clegg
Frank Clegg is the former President of Microsoft Canada. He is leading and building a national organization in Canada, Citizens for Safe Technology (C4ST) to raise public awareness of the potential health effects associated with electromagnetic radiation from wireless technology.

Introducing C4ST - Citizens For Safe Technology

As many of you are aware, I have been investing my time understanding the potential health effects associated with electromagnetic radiation. Issues such as emissions from cell towers, Wi-Fi in schools and smart meters. I have spoken to several experts, read numerous studies, attended presentations by Health Canada and Industry Canada and become involved in situations in Oakville, Grand Bend, Barrie and Uxbridge. I have concluded that Health Canada’s methods are out of date and safety limits are too weak to protect Canadians. China has limits that are 100 times stricter than ours. I worry we have a situation comparable to tobacco where Health Canada will be many years too late to take the appropriate action.

I have signed on to lead and build a national organization to raise public awareness of this issue. Our objective is to convince Industry Canada and Health Canada to change the process of distributing this technology and update their safety standards to acceptable levels. Please open the attached document to learn about this new national organization, C4ST – Citizens For Safe Technology. Join us in our goal of reaching 1 million Canadians to influence Industry Canada and Health Canada and help insure the health of all Canadians.

"Carcinogenic Technojunk" for Kids this Holiday Season

LeapFrog, LeapPad 2
Fourteen percent of Americans planned to give a LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet ($100) as a present, according to a Consumer Reports poll in 2011 . As one FB friend says about children's "learning tablets" – “more carcinogenic technojunk masquerading as educational tools”. We should write to consumer groups and toy manufacturers to remind them of their responsibility in protecting the health of children and the human rights and well-being of workers who make these gadgets in sweatshops in China. If the article on “cool new toy tablets” incites people to buy these for their kids, then they do not care at all about their child’s health.

Here is what “Consumer Reports” says about toy tablets:
Consumer Reports Talk About Toy Tablets(source: BSCKids, 9 December 2011)

“Consumer Reports have tested the latest in toy tablets. “Toy tablets don’t have all the whistles and bells that standard tablets do, but their learning apps and kid-friendly content make them ideal for children” said Paul Reynolds, electronic editor, Consumer Report. The tablets were put to trial by the Consumer Report’s lab to see how good they functioned and by children of the appropriate ages to see how much the kids were attracted to them. Each tablet has a color touch-screen display, a few loaded games, and apps. The tablets can be linked to a PC for new downloads and software upgrades. The Vici Tab is rechargable. The other tablets use AA batteries.

Atorvastatin (Generic Lipitor) Side Effects and Complications

Not only is there a problem with contaminated atorvastatin (generic Lipitor) but also it has serious side effects and complications.

Atorvastatin (Lipitor) Side Effects & Complications
People’s Pharmacy, 29 October 2012

It is not entirely clear why Lipitor became the most successful drug in the history of the pharmaceutical industry. Tens of millions of people have taken Lipitor to lower their bad LDL cholesterol. It is estimated that sales of this single drug brought in over $130 billion to Pfizer, its manufacturer. No other drug in history has ever come close to this mind boggling number.

Now that Lipitor has become available in its generic form as atorvastatin, it will no doubt continue to be taken by millions of patients, though the cost will clearly come down. Despite its popularity with physicians and its clear ability to bring cholesterol numbers down, there are some serious side effects to contend with. Many of these complications were not discovered until years after the drug was on the market.

Humanity's Challenge: The Winter Solstice of 2012

We are moving into the Year of the Snake,
where the Spleen energy field and the Heart
will move into prominence. These organ systems
cannot tolerate the assault of  artificial
electromagnetic fields.
With the roll-out of the Smart Meter Grid, “Americans are being unwittingly forced to participate in the rapid build out of a power grid based on faulty values of man-over-nature, man-over-time, and man-over-man beliefs. And, the primary targets of this aggression will be women and children, due to their heightened vulnerability to electromagnetic fields…

“[Either] we are living the closing chapter in a history of de-evolutionary choices, or we have reached the crucial turning point where the light of dawning consciousness turns humanity back to its rightful relationship with the true source of connection, power and energy… History will record the energetic tsunami in 2012 in one of two ways. We will unleash the largest wave of destructive technology ever known to mankind, or we will withdraw our energies from the consumer-driven model...”

I personally fear that we are indeed headed to destruction through our own greed for newer and better-performing technology, our ignorance of the health and ethical implications, and our lack of compassion for the vulnerability of more sensitive individuals, particularly children.

Smart Meters: The Winter Solstice Tsunami of 2012

Asia with single whisker on each side
Following is the first part of an article from about the effects of electromagnetic radiation generated by smart meters on a cat. The author, who took care of the cat, comments that “very few smart meter ratepayers are aware of the complexity of this new technology, and the resulting security, safety, and health hazards.” This is exactly the type of reaction we are experiencing from wireless technology users who, when told about potential risks are “disturbed”, surprised that there could be potential health effects - they never heard about this. Their reaction is that they do not want to know about it. They are mostly young people, growing up with this technology and using it all the time. They cannot see what could replace it. In the past we got along without having to talk on phones or accessing the Internet anywhere at any time. Young people do not know anything else and cannot do without this technology.

After a short time, I began feeling an in-rush of disruptive energy blanketing the neighborhood, inside the house and out, approximately every other hour, every day and night. I have felt this phenomenon before, on the West coast as well as the East, and because of it I have moved fourteen times in four years, without success.

Dr. Olle Johansson's Letter on Electrohypersensitivity (EHS)

Dr. Olle Johansson

Recently, André Fauteux, Editor of the Canadian magazine, "Maison du 21e siècle" asked Dr. Olle Johansson to send him the Swedish Government document confirming that electrosensitivity is a recognized functional impairment.  Here is Dr. Johansson's reply.

"In essence," he writes, "no official bodies or governments are needed to recognize any functional impairment. The presence or lack of EHS studies are not a prerequisite for any functional impairments, on the contrary. Impairments are viewed from the point of the environment.

"No human being is in itself impaired, there are instead shortcomings in the environment that cause the impairment. Thus, it is the environment that should be “treated”!

"One way is through the introduction of the proper biologically-based EMF human exposure guidelines. This environment-related impairment view means that even though one does not have a scientifically-based complete explanation for the impairment electrohypersensitivity, and in contrast to disagreements in the scientific society, the person with electrohypersensitivity shall always be met in a respectful way and with all necessary support with the single goal to eliminate the impairment."

World Health Organization Report on Fukushima a Travesty

A girl holds her petition to ask the Education Ministry to protect
people from radioactive contamination in Fukushima Prefecture.

The World Health Organisation has failed in its obligation to protect the public and is guilty of the crime of non-assistance.

WHO Report on Fukushima a Travesty

World Health Organisation subservient to nuclear lobby

The World Health Report (May 2012) entitled “Preliminary dose estimation from the nuclear accident after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami” [1] is a public relations exercise to reassure the world that WHO is fulfilling its role in the area of radiation and health. Following the preliminary dose estimation, WHO will complete a health risk assessment to “support the identification of needs and priorities for public health action.” But this report and the one to follow cannot help those people in Japan who should have been evacuated much sooner and who will certainly suffer health consequences of varying degrees from their exposure to radiation since March 2011.

Thyroid Disease Rate Spiked to 43.7% of Children Living in Fukushima City

Posted by Mochizuki, Fukushima Diary, 11 September 2012

Thyroid disease rate spiked to 43.7%, “About 1 in 2 children have nodule or cyst in Fukushima city”

Healthy children are decreasing in Fukushima.

43.7% of children turned out to have nodules or cysts in Fukushima city.

Fukushima local government conducted thyroid test for under 18 living in Fukushima city.

The target persons were 53,619 and 44,959(83.8%)had the test. The test was conducted from 5/14 to 8/31/2012.

On 9/11/2012, they released the result of 42,060 of them, which they finished the test with by 8/24/2012. (The results from 8/25 to 8/31/2012 are not published yet.)

The result showed 18,119 (43.1%) of them have thyroid nodules (≦5.0mm) or cysts (≦20.0mm) and 239 (0.6%) of them have thyroid nodules (≧5.1mm) or cyst (≧20.1mm). In total, 43.7% of the children who had the test in Fukushima city turned out to have nodules and cysts.

In their previous test, it was 35.8%, which means it spiked up by 7.9%. (cf. Thyroid nodules rate in Fukushima is 20 time higher than in Chernobyl)

The ratio of women to have nodules and cysts (≧3.1m) was 130% of the one of men.

13,000 People File Second Mass Complaint Against TEPCO

by Masakazu Honda, Staff Writer, Asahi Shimbun, 16 November 2012

More than 13,000 people have filed a criminal complaint against Japanese government officials, executives of Tokyo Electric Power Co. and experts for their roles in last year's disaster at TEPCO's Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

A group of 13,262 complainants from around Japan filed the paperwork with the Fukushima District Public Prosecutors Office on Nov. 15. The group argued that the government and TEPCO executives did not take adequate safety measures, even though they could foresee that a major earthquake could spawn a tsunami and cause severe nuclear accidents.

The complainants said this constituted professional negligence resulting in deaths and injuries, and violated Japan's environmental laws by emitting substances harmful to human health.

Testimony of Electrohypersensitivity : Phil Inkley, United Kingdom

Phil Inkley outside his caravan in the woods
Here is another testimony of a person from the United Kingdom living with electrohypersensitivity (EHS).   Phil Inkley says he first experienced symptoms of EHS around the time that Wi-Fi came along. He had been working as a sound technician and, being from a "techy" background, regularly fixed computers for family and friends. After a day working around strong Wi-Fi he would feel pressure at his temples and fluttering pains in his chest.  "Pressure at his temples" - this is exactly the unpleasant sensation I experience when in the public library reading room which has Wi-Fi.

The Too Frequent Use of Digital Media Reduces the Brain Capacity of Our Children, Warns Top German Neuroscientist

Psychiatrist and brain researcher Manfred Spitzer warns parents and educators

The neuroscientist and medical director of the Psychiatric University Hospital Ulm, Professor Manfred Spitzer, has recently written a best-selling book, “Digitale Demenz. Wie wir uns and unsere Kinder un den Verstand bringen” (“Digital dementia. How we drive us and our children mad”). Spitzer says that the too frequent use of Internet can make people dumb. He shows what parents, teachers and politicians can do to protect young people. Read the book review by Dr Rudolf Hänsel, qualified psychologist, Lindau/Germany, in full here on “Current Concerns”.

While Spitzer places emphasis on the social, neurological, and behavioral implications of over-exposure to digital media, he also goes into the physical consequences, but makes no mention of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by wireless technology. Spitzer presents a series of studies showing that insomnia, depression and addiction are extremely dangerous consequences of the use of digital media “whose impact on the overall health development of today’s young generation can hardly be overestimated”. He says that computers and the Internet do not belong in nursery schools and that this technology in the classroom, “leads to more superficial thinking, it distracts and has undesirable side effects, which range from mere disorders to child pornography and violence.”

What Spitzer says about Facebook should be widely quoted:

Mandatory Vaccination Programs : Switzerland and Poland

A referendum opposing the revised Epidemics Act has recently been launched by a part of the Swiss population. If this law were approved, the Swiss authorities could decide through the new law whether a health situation is exceptional and certain groups of people needed to be vaccinated (professionals, children etc.). These persons will no longer have a choice.  The referendum deadline is 17 January 2013.

Vaccinations do not prevent a substantial percentage of diseases. There is collusion with the pharmaceutical industry which has a strong presence in Switzerland.   From a legal point of view, vaccinations represent bodily harm. They are filled with heavy metals and other poisons. They have never been studied independently and through double blind tests, using placebos. They have many side effects. They have never been proven effective as a protective mechanism against disease. They are a massive charge for the immune system of a young person and his unprotected brain.

There was a similar debate regarding mandatory vaccination – and even medicating people prophylactically –  going on recently in Poland. In April 2012, Eliza Walczak addressed the Polish Senate Committee of Diseases. As a Jewish Holocaust survivor, she compares the new mandatory vaccine measures in Poland to Nazi crimes. We have already heard similar statements from experts about exposing large, vulnerable populations against their will, particularly children, to the electromagnetic radiation emitted by wireless technology. This is a serious violation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Nuremberg Code (directives for human experimentation).

Following are extracts from Eliza Walczak’s address to the Polish Senate. (I’ve taken the liberty of paraphrasing and correcting some grammatical errors in the translation.) The Chairman of the Senate called her speech, “scandalous”. It was published on Jane Burgermeister’s site www.birdflu666.wordpress.com which is worth looking at.

San Diego State University Brain Cancer Cluster from Cell Tower?

31 May 2013:  This recent example from France is related to the post which follows :

After two cases of cancer in children in the same village of 1,850 inhabitants in the north of France, members of three health agencies, including radiofrequency experts, travelled to the village to hold a public meeting on 22 May 2013 on this issue. Parents felt that the cause may be due to the presence of three mobile phone antennas near the school. One agency is ANSES, the French National Agency for Health, Environment, and Safety. Although not convinced that the mobile phone antennas may be the cause of the cancer, “we are not waiting until a third cancer declares itself,” said the regional delegate of Priartem, a national association for the regulation of placement of mobile phone antennas. She is outraged by the manner in which health monitoring is practiced by agencies when confronted with cancer clusters, defined as several cases of cancer (generally of the same type) observed within a group of individuals in a more or less limited geographical area and over the course of a limited period of time.”

Wireless Technology Invades Private Schools in Switzerland, While Public Schools Resist

"Electronic tablets are entering the classroom"
(Drawing by Burki, 24 Heures - "pomme" = apple)
High-tech equipment (tablets and interactive whiteboards) connected by Wi-Fi are invading private schools in Switzerland. The authorities are talking about the financial (as opposed to health) cost. Public schools in canton Vaud are resisting this technology. Jacques Daniélou, President of the Vaudois Pedagogical Society says, “I am not confronted with demands from teachers ready to descend into the streets for more technology! On the contrary, I feel hesitation. We can hardly measure the advantages at this stage of a sudden, premature evolution.” Following the article appearing in the Swiss newspaper 24 Heures, read what two associations (in France and Québec) advocating for the health safety of wireless technologies say about tablets and interactive whiteboards. These technologies have numerous consequences for the health of children. The State Council of the canton of Neuchâtel has strictly limited use of wireless technology in schools.

Text of Motion Adopted Unanimously by the Swiss Town of Le Landeron Regarding Planning and Regulation of Installation of Mobile Phone Antennas

World-wide, communities are fighting to regulate installation of mobile phone antennas in residential areas and close to schools, nurseries, hospitals. Ordinary citizens are at this moment struggling to stop antennas being erected near homes in East Fishkill, New York, and in the commune of Thônex, canton Geneva, Switzerland. Recently, the General Council of the commune of Le Landeron , canton Neuchâtel, unanimously adopted (33 to 0) a motion aimed at regulating installation of mobile phone antennas on its territory.  Following is the text of the motion which serves as an excellent example of the type of arguments and recommendations to put forth in such cases.   In 2010, the canton of Neuchâtel had already issued a decree limiting the use of Wi-Fi in classrooms in pre-schools, primary and secondary 1 schools.

Motion aiming to request elaboration of planning and regulation concerning installation of mobile phone antennas on the territory of Le Landeron

Arguments

The presence of mobile phone antennas near inhabited areas is an important and difficult problem to manage for communes. WHO’s [World Health Organization] decision of 31 May 2011 to classify electromagnetic waves as potentially carcinogenic has increased the fear of residents living near this type of antenna. The limit values of emission established by ORNI [Ordinance of 23 December 1999 on Protection against Non-Ionizing Radiation] is quite obsolete and much superior to the new limits recommended by members of the scientific and medical community.

Germany Has Converted 25 Percent of Its Power Grid to Renewable Energy Sources

Solar panels cover rooftops of a German farming village.
(InsideClimate News/Osha Gray Davidson)

Since the year 2000, Germany - which is gradually  abandoning nuclear energy - has converted 25 percent of its power grid to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and biomass.  Why isn't the U.S. taking the same path?  A  recent report says that the U.S. is on track to become the leading oil and gas producer by 2020, which suggests that the country is using its resources to deepen its dependency on fossil fuels rather than encourage renewable energy initiatives.  And, then, there is no debate on climate change in Germany.

How Germany Is Getting to 100 Percent Renewable Energy
by Thomas Hedges, published on TruthDig.com, 15 November 2012

There is no debate on climate change in Germany. The temperature for the past 10 months has been three degrees above average and we’re again on course for the warmest year on record. There’s no dispute among Germans as to whether this change is man-made, or that we contribute to it and need to stop accelerating the process.

Involuntary Subjection of People 24/7 to the Emissions of Mobile Phone Antennas Contravenes the Nuremberg Code

“Of particular concern to the public – and generating the most outrage – is the involuntary subjection of certain groups of the population 24 hours/day, 7 days/week to the emissions of GSM base-stations, when they are insensitively sited near to homes, schools and hospitals. The environment of these people is permanently and unavoidably polluted. This is a totally unacceptable state of affairs, which raises serious ethical questions, and arguably contravenes the Nuremberg Code [Directives for Human Experimentation - which states that "voluntary consent of the human subject is absolutely essential"] , in that it is these people who will eventually reveal the degree to which chronic exposure to such fields is noxious – information that is not currently available: in other words, they are effectively involuntary subjects in a mass experiment.”

These are the words of Dr. Gerard Hyland, who in 2001 produced a report on the physiological and environmental effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation to the European Parliament. This was 11 years ago, and we are almost no further advanced on protecting the population, especially children, from the potential risks of wireless technologies.

Following are a few extracts from Dr. Hyland’s report: policy recommendations to the European Parliament the lack of understanding of the potentially harmful health effects of cell phones and GSM base stations, the attempts by regulatory agencies to down-play risks (“there is currently an attempt under the aegis of the World Health Organisation to globally ‘harmonise’ exposure standards, by persuading countries with more stringent limits – such as Russia and China - to relax them in favour of the higher levels tolerated in the West”), and a list of non-thermal adverse health effects, including memory impairment. Remember, the report was written in 2001. Maybe I am pessimistic, but it seems we are moving further away from recognizing the dangers of mobile telephony and implementation of efforts to protect the population.

Cigarettes are Effective Weapons

International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum
On 23 September 2012, two out of three Swiss voters rejected the Lung League’s initiative for a uniform nationwide law banning smoking in indoor working places. Cantons, however, are allowed to state exceptions. An estimated 10,000 people working in the restaurant sector face serious health risks from second-hand smoke. Now, there is outrage over donations made by Japanese Tobacco International to the Geneva-based International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum and to the Geneva Red Cross. Ties with firms whose activities include the sale or manufacture of weapons, alcohol, tobacco, or products that are clearly identified as harmful to the environment are strictly forbidden under Red Cross regulations. With Philip Morris based in Lausanne, the tobacco lobby is strong in Switzerland. Japan Tobacco International’s headquarters are located in Geneva. Is there no integrity regarding the source of donations to non-profit associations like the Red Cross?  It is similar to companies making products full of toxic substances and polluting the environment contributing to national cancer societies.

One reader of the Tribune de Genève, Chloé Peytermann, contributed this comment to the newspaper:

Cigarettes are weapons

“Regarding the support of Japan Tobacco International (JTI) to the Geneva Red Cross, Mr. Guy Mettan [President of the Geneva Red Cross] says he does not at all see ‘discriminating against a perfectly legitimate company which has a name and an address, which is completely respectable and employs hundreds of persons in Geneva. It’s not a producer of cannons!” I’m sorry to inform him that cigarettes are more effective weapons than cannons. “Cigarettes. First of all, the figures. Huge figures. Each year, cigarettes kill more persons than malaria, more than AIDS, more than wars, more than terrorism…” (texte from Le Monde). It seems shocking that a person leading an organization whose ethics are a daily struggle, is trafficking the image that tobacco companies wish to give : the image of good, “respectable”. No! To sell a product, as legal as it is, which leads one out of three consumers to the grave, is not “respectable”. If each person were questioned about his profession, regarding the impacts of deceitful communication campaigns conducted by these companies, their strategies of obstruction and infiltration of the health sector, maybe things would be different. Have the employees of JTI spent a day in an oncology unit to see the fruit of their labor?”

Get the Cell Out of Here !

This is a particularly human story about a couple living in “Little Switzerland” (East Fishkill, New York) who are angry at a company trying to erect a 150-foot cell tower in the middle of their neighborhood, 500 feet from their home. They are concerned for the health of their five grandchildren who play in their yard when they visit. They are also concerned that the value of their home would probably drop at least 20%. Installing the tower would mean cutting down 69 trees. Incidents like these are occurring world-wide. Is it really necessary to erect these “monstrosities” which bring health risks in order to fill a gap in cell phone coverage?

HOPEWELL JUNCTION — Angry residents in the Little Switzerland section of this hamlet will finally get a chance tonight to face off against representatives from Homeland Towers, LLC, the company trying to build a 150-foot cell tower in the middle of their neighborhood.

Warning to Young Women: Keeping a Cell Phone in the Bra Could Increase the Risk for Breast Cancer

A number of young women keep their cell phones in their bra.  This is a very dangerous habit because the radiation a cell phone emits might increase the risk for breast cancer.  Watch the following 3-minute special report from KTVU.com. California, and read the article, whose author talked to Dr. Devra Davis, epidemiologist.  Dr. Davis has teamed with medical doctors from a breast imaging center and a cancer-testing laboratory who are preparing a case study report on four young women with no known family history or risks for breast cancer.  These women developed clusters of breast cancer in highly unusual areas after carrying cell phones in their bras for years.

Breast cancer in young women is on the rise in Geneva and throughout Europe.  Could this be one of the causes?  We tend to disregard these warnings, believing we are invincible, and that this is nonsense, however, most cell phone manufacturers warn in accompanying operating manuals that the phone must be kept at least half an inch from the body.

Newsclip:  http://www.ktvu.com/videos/news/special-report-keeping-cell-phone-in-bra-may-lead/vhPF8/ - one young woman (age 21) diagnosed with breast cancer, had to have her breast removed.

Never Stick This In Your Bra!
Bottom Line Publications.com, Healthy Women

When you don’t have a purse or pocket but still want to stay connected to the world, nestling your cell phone into your cleavage for safekeeping may seem like a great solution. In fact, so many women now do this that there’s even a new type of bra with a pocket to hold a phone.

Death After Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine: Causal or Coincidental?

Researcher Lucija Tomljenovic
Research was recently carried out by two scientists at the University of British Columbia, Christopher Shaw and Lucija Tomljenovic to determine whether or not some serious autoimmune and neurological adverse reactions (ADRs) following HPV vaccination are causal or merely coincidental and to validate a biomarker-based immunehistochemical (IHC) protocol for assessing causality in case of vaccination-suspected serious adverse neurological outcomes. The study suggests that HPV vaccines containing HPV-16L1 antigens pose an inherent risk for triggering potentially fatal autoimmune vasculopathies.

This has implications for medical practice. Cerebral vasculitis is a serious disease which typically results in fatal outcomes when undiagnosed and left untreated. The fact that many of the symptoms reported to vaccine safety surveillance databases following HPV vaccination are indicative of cerebral vasculitis, but are unrecognized as such (i.e., intense persistent migraines, syncope, seizures, tremors and tingling, myalgia, locomotor abnormalities, psychotic symptoms and cognitive deficits), is a serious concern in light of the present findings. It thus appears that in some cases vaccination may be the triggering factor of fatal autoimmune/neurological events. Physicians should be aware of this association.

The study was published in October 2012 in Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs and was posted on the site of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) America. Following is an article posted on straight.com about the study. The full study is available here.

Read also Dr. Mercola's article on the HPV vaccine.  As of mid-2012, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) has received 119 reports of death following HPV vaccination, as well as:  894 reports of disability, 517 life-threatening adverse events, 9,889 emergency room visits and 2,781 hospitalizations.

Free Wi-Fi at Geneva's University Hospital

Wi-Fi in hospital patients’ rooms can be harmful. In December 2008, my companion was placed in a seven-bed room after removal of his lung (diagnosis of mesothelioma – cancer of the pleura). His post-operative condition deteriorated : difficulties breathing and incisions which would not heal. The patient in the bed next to his was working the whole day on a Wi-Fi –connected computer.

In June 2008, Wi-Fi was installed at this hospital (HUG – Geneva’s university hospital) – 200 antennas deployed in all  care units of including the Maternity, Children’s Hospital, Palliative Care Service, and hospital for the elderly.

The article appearing in HUG’s magazine, « Pulsations » in June 2008 shows the level of ignorance of the Geneva medical profession concerning the risks of wireless technology. When I wrote to the Director-General of HUG in 2010, he replied, “Considering the absence of proof, demonstrated by actual scientific knowledge, that exposure to Wi-Fi antennas could cause health problems, but also proof of the total harmlessness of this technology, HUG does not foresee taking back its decision to offer this new benefit to its users, considering the advantages of having W-Fi at the hospital for patients’ comfort …”

Washington State's San Juan County Bans GMO Cultivation

San Juan islands
Washington state's San Juan County, consisting of 176 islands and reefs, population 15,900, passed an initiative making it illegal to “propagate, cultivate, raise or grow” genetically modified plants, animals and other organisms. California's ballot initiative requiring labeling of  GMO food failed.  When India's GMO labeling law comes into effect at the start of 2013, the United States and Canada will be the only two major nations in the world that do not require products containing genetically modified ingredients to be labeled.

Monsanto Faces $7.5 Billion Payout to 5 Million Brazilian Soy Farmers

Deforestation in the Amazon to make way for soy cultivation
In 2011, Brazil planted 30.3 million hectares of genetically modified (GM) crops, particularly soy, most of which is exported to Europe, where it is used to feed cattle and for biofuels, and to China for its growing beef industry.  Monsanto penalized farmers who did not keep GM soy strictly separated from non GM soy, by requiring them to pay a three percent fee if tests of non GM soy crops uncovered Roundup Ready (GM) soy.  In 2009, a group of rural syndicates in Brazil's southernmost state, Rio Grande Do Sul, took Monsanto to court, charging that separating GM and non-GM soy was virtually impossible and that therefore the "Monsanto tax" was unjust.  A judge from this state ruled in April 2012 that Monsanto's fees were illegal and noted that the Roundup Ready seed patent had already expired in the Brazil. Monsanto was not only ordered to stop collecting the royalty fees but to also return all such fees collected since 2004. Such collected royalties amount to $2 billion.

Monsanto appealed the ruling but was dealt another blow on June 12 when the Brazil Supreme Court decided unanimously that whatever the Rio Grande Do Sul courts rule on this matter should apply to the whole of Brazil. This caused the number of plaintiffs to balloon to five million and the total royalty owed, to rise to $7.5 billion.

One wonders how deep the pockets of giant corporations are.  Can they continue paying out damages from a rising number of lawsuits?  Will this really deter them from causing devastation to health and the environment?

Spike in "Aggressive" Brain Cancer in Denmark

The number of men diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most malignant type of brain cancer, has nearly doubled over the last ten years.  The Danish Cancer Society is saying that it has no idea what is causing this.  National cancer societies of course would say this, because cancer research, diagnosis and treatment bring in huge sums of money for the cancer industry.  These societies also receive funding from the telecoms industry.  For instance, members of the Board of Trustees of the American Cancer Society have included corporate executives from the telecoms, pharmaceutical, pesticide, media, and biotech industries.

Spike in “Aggressive” Brain Cancer in Denmark
Microwave News, 8 November 2012

The Danish Cancer Society is reporting that the number of men diagnosed with glioblastoma —the most malignant type of brain cancer— has nearly doubled over the last ten years. Hans Skovgaard Poulsen, the head of neuro-oncology at Copenhagen University Hospital, is calling it a "frightening development."

The society is not linking the increase to cell phones or to anything else. "We have no idea what caused it," Poulsen said in a statement issued by the Danish Cancer Society on November 2.

"How a GMO, a Pesticide, and a System Can Be Toxic" by Gilles-Eric Séralini

Gilles-Eric Séralini (center) and his team
"We read here and there that millions of animals and Americans eat GMOs every day for years with no consequence: how can people utter such falsehoods? There, the supply chains are not segregated, and GMOs are not labelled, so no epidemiological study is possible.

"Transparency of health data and long-term studies by scientists with contradictory viewpoints are absolute necessities. We can help implement them. The explosion of chronic diseases over the past sixty years should encourage our political leaders to take note of health and environmental alerts, and not to endorse rushed refutations and orchestrated pillorying.

"It is consciousness and solidarity that our society needs: in a word, wisdom. Scientists have the right to be wrong. But they have a duty to avoid what may be avoidable: most major scandals of public health are avoidable. The science that I practice was not made to feed the insatiable ogre of finance but to protect the human beings of today and tomorrow."

Obesogens : An Environmental Link to Obesity

Obesity has risen steadily in the United States over the past 150 years, with a marked uptick in recent decades. In the United States today more than 35 percent of adults and nearly 17 percent of children aged 2 to 19 years are obese. Obesity plagues people not just in the United States but worldwide, including, increasingly, developing countries. Convincing evidence suggests that diet and activity level are not the only factors in the rising obesity trend. Chemical "obesogens" may alter human metabolism and predispose some people to gain weight. The effects of early-life exposure, during fetal and infant development, may be irreversible which means these people will fight a life-long battle against weight gain. It is very unfortunate that certain health groups continue to talk about prevention in terms of diet and activity level. Too little attention is being paid to the environmental toxins in our lives which can cause obesity. Following are extracts from an article which appeared in Mother Earth News. (Click here for article in full.)

Obesogens: An Environmental Link to Obesity
by Wendee Holtcamp for Environmental Health Perspectives, 21 February 2012

“Obesity has risen steadily in the United States over the past 150 years, with a marked uptick in recent decades. In the United States today more than 35 percent of adults and nearly 17 percent of children aged 2 to19 years are obese. Obesity plagues people not just in the United States but worldwide, including, increasingly, developing countries. Even animals — pets, laboratory animals, and urban rats — have experienced increases in average body weight over the past several decades, trends not necessarily explained by diet and exercise. In the words of Robert H. Lustig, a professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, “[E]ven those at the lower end of the BMI [body mass index] curve are gaining weight. Whatever is happening is happening to everyone, suggesting an environmental trigger.

Syngenta Spends Millions to Deflect Evidence Against Atrazine

“Yet again, a multinational corporation seeks to hide the truth about its toxic product.” Atrazine, a widely used pesticide in the United States produced by the Swiss company Syngenta, has been said to cause cancer. A recent report from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences names atrazine among a group of endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are “obesogens” — meaning they are suspected of contributing to the obesity epidemic now underway in this country. In addition, evidence has recently surfaced showing that, for more than a decade, Syngenta has spent millions of dollars to pay scientists and journalists to deny and deflect the growing documentation of the human health dangers posed by atrazine.

Syngenta Spends Millions to Deflect Evidence Against Atrazine Herbicide
Center for Media and Democracy, 21 February 2012 – posted on Mother Earth News

On February 7, 2012, the Center for Media and Democracy posted more than 200 emails, invoices and other documents unsealed as part of a major lawsuit against Syngenta Crop Protection, Inc., the primary manufacturer of the weed-killer "atrazine."

Syngenta, World's Largest Agrochemical Company, Pays $105 Million to Settle U.S. Litigation for Contamination of Water Supplies with Atrazine

Atrazine-induced deformations in frogs
In May 2012, Syngenta agreed to pay $105 million to settle a class-action lawsuit in which water utilities in the U.S. Midwest claimed that one of the Swiss company's widely used weedkillers, atrazine, contaminated water supplies. Water companies eligible to collect payments under the settlement serve 52 million people.

In use since 1958, some 76 million pounds of atrazine are being applied each year in the United States, mostly on cornfields.  It is found in 94% of the nation’s drinking water. The herbicide has been banned in Switzerland, and in the European Union since 2004, but is still being used in 60 countries. It is a known endocrine disruptor and carcinogen and is connected to low sperm levels in men. A senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council said there is increasing evidence that atrazine poses a threat to Midwestern women who become pregnant early in the crop-growing season, when the application of atrazine and other chemicals spikes.

Syngenta, the world’s largest agrochemical company and third-largest seed company, employs 26,300 persons.  In 2011, it earned a revenue of $13.3 billion. Its products include Paraquat (Gramaxone), Atrazine, 120 active pesticides, and genetically modified maize products including Aatrex and Gesaprim.

France recently banned Syngenta's insecticide Cruiser, after recent studies showed that it may be affecting bees' ability to navigate, contributing to bee decline (Colony Collapse Disorder).

Documentary "Scientists Under Attack" : GMO Research

Dr. Arpad Pusztai
The first part of the 59-minute 2010 documentary “Scientists Under Attack”, produced and written by Bertram Verhaag, describes the inside story of independent research on the safety of genetically modified (GM) food and crops.  Almost all the scientists undertaking research on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are funded either directly or indirectly by industry.  It is very difficult to conduct independent research because companies like Monsanto do not allow scientists to undertake experiments on their patented GM products. The film features Jeffrey Smith, Arpad Pusztai, one of the first independent scientists to test for the safety of GMO foods, and Ignacio Chapela.

Young Electrosensitive Person Commits Suicide

We must do all we can to raise awareness of the condition of electrosensitivity (ES) which is little understood by the general population and health professionals. This includes sharing experiences of ES with journalists. Faye Dobson is writing an article on ES and would like to hear from persons in the UK who could/would help (faye@catersnews.com). Martyn Halle, who writes on health for national newspapers, has approached ES-UK after reading the news about Michael Nield’s death. He hopes to publish a story about ES in the Mail on 11 November (m.halle@blueyonder.co.uk).

‘Zapping in head’ from mobiles led son to kill himself
by Jordan Day, Cambridge News, 6 November 2012

A university graduate committed suicide after a lengthy battle with a sensitivity to mobile phones, an inquest heard.

Oxford graduate Michael Nield suffered with electro sensitivity – the term used to describe someone who has an unhealthy sensitivity to a particular source of electricity.

In Michael’s case it was mobile phones and phone masts. He had to sleep with a microfibre tent over his bed to reduce the radiation.

Dutch Court Annuls Permit for Mobile Phone Antenna on Concern for Bees

This very important court decision in the Netherlands has annulled a permit for a mobile phone antenna due to beekeeping activities in the area.

Dutch court overturns cell permit on concern for bees
Telecompaper, 5 November 2012

A court in Zutphen, Netherlands has annulled a permit for a UMTS antenna due to beekeeping activities in the area. The Winterswijk municipality gave KPN the permit to build the tower in November 2010. Five local residents filed an appeal against the permit, and the court found that the city did not motivate its decision well enough to show there would be no negative consequences from the cell site. One of the residents keeps bees around 80m from the proposed site; in the appeal against the site, he pointed to research in Germany and Switzerland on the effects of electromagnetic radiation on bees. The city pointed to other research showing bee deaths related to other factors and said the radiation in this case would be much less than in the German research. However the court found that the city needed to provide more concrete sources of research to sustain its argument and it could not be ruled out that the site would have an effect on the bees.

Weaver Birds

Something to refresh readers' minds and eyes ... weaver birds :

Ever try to weave a basket out of grasses or palm fronds? It's a bit difficult, right? Takes a while to get the hang of it? Well what if you tried to weave a basket using just your mouth and starting out with one piece of grass? It'd be really tough, right? But it's nothing for the weaverbird!

Weavers are small birds related to finches. There are an incredible 57 species of weavers and all have their own styles and strategies for building elaborate nests, but no matter the various styles or materials used, all are mind-blowing.

Typically it is the male birds that build the nests as a way to woo females. The better the builder, the more likely he is to find a mate. Many species start out with just a single strand of plant fiber and begin the seemingly miraculous project from there.

DECT Cordless Phones and Blood Pressure

Most of my friends have DECT cordless phones in their homes. One of the main sources of electromagnetic pollution in my flat comes from a neighbor's DECT phone.   The author of this case history, Martin Virnich, PhD, who is an electrical engineer and leading building biology professional, concludes that individual health symptoms are observed well below ICNIRP-based exposure limits, that we need to test for a broad spectrum of electromagnetic fields, and that “by substantially reducing exposure levels, the overall health status improves and disease symptoms can even disappear.”

2005 Case History 2 - DECT Cordless Phones and Blood Pressure
by Martin Virnich, PhD

It is rare to have such ideal study conditions: An extremely high blood pressure episode causes a patient to seek help at the ER, where his blood pressure is quickly stabilized and returns to normal. After a one-week stay at the hospital, he returns home and his blood pressure goes up again. The ambient RF radiation levels are very low, the indoor wireless transmitter, a DECT cordless phone base station, is disabled, and the patient is convinced that it must be some other environmental factor that keeps his blood pressure that high. So in this case the fear of electrosmog cannot be blamed for any adverse reactions.

McGill University Health Center Lifts Cell Phone Ban in Most of Its Hospital Environment

The McGill University Health Center is lifting its ban on cell phones in most of the hospital environment. At Geneva’s University hospital (HUG), not only are cell phones allowed throughout most of the hospital, but Wi-Fi is available in patients’ rooms, including at the children’s hospital. The staff have not connected the dots to cell phones and Wi-Fi emitting damaging electromagnetic waves that WHO has labeled “possibly cancer-causing.” When my companion, Adon, was recovering from surgical removal of his lung in a seven-bed room at HUG, the person in the bed next to him was using his computer all day long.  Adon’s surgical incisions would not heal. One month after the lung removal, he had to undergo a second major operation when the incisions came apart. He almost died during surgery. He lived three more months, dying of mesothelioma from exposure to asbestos.

It’s a nuisance that nearly everyone who steps into a hospital has to contend with: turning off one’s smartphone or risk being tapped on the shoulder by a security guard.

Blind to the Truth: The Eye-Damaging Effects of Statins

Another reason for being cautious about taking statins : its damaging effect on the eyes. A friend of mine throws all her doctors’ prescriptions for statins in a drawer without having them filled.  Her doctor never listened to her complaints about muscle weakness when she took statins (for a very short time).

Blind to the Truth: The Eye-Damaging Effects of Statins

Published research has raised concern about the possibility that statin drugs are damaging the eyes of those taking them. Titled, “Age-related cataract is associated with type 2 diabetes and statin use,” and published in the journal Optometry and Vision Science, researchers found that those taking statin drugs had 48% higher risk of pathological eye lense changes (nuclear sclerosis and cortical cataract) associated with increased opacity, i.e. cataracts.

U.S. Nuclear Facilities Remain Vulnerable to Potential Catastrophic Events

Oyster Creek nuclear facility
During Hurricane Sandy, the Oyster Creek nuclear facility, located 40 miles north of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and the oldest nuclear facility in the nation, went to “high alert” due to high-water levels in its water intake structure. Although the plant was shut down for refueling at the time, its plutonium was in danger of overheating.

The risks of nuclear power generation are magnified by the fact that nuclear power plants are always located near a river, lake or ocean. That is because producing nuclear power creates a lot of heat, which needs to be dissipated by huge volumes of water. These cooling systems are all that prevents the plutonium in reactor cores from going critical and melting down, much like what happened at Fukushima. Locating nuclear plants near bodies of water has its risks, which range from the clogging of intake pipes by barnacles, mussels, jellyfish, to potential damage from storm surges, such as those created by Hurricane Sandy.

Thirty-four reactors, a third of those in the U.S., are sited along rivers with dams upstream. Add to this, the risks of fire (47 reactors violate fire protection regulations) and seismic activity (seismic protection is known to be less than the seismic hazards faced by 27 reactors), according to the Nuclear Power Information Tracker.

Last year, U.S. nuclear power plants were threatened by earthquake (North Anna, Virginia) and flooding (Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska) and this year, by abnormally high water temperatures.  Yet, the American public remains more or less ignorant of the vulnerability of its nuclear reactors and also of the devastating  aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear accident which continues to unfold. (See also "Vulnerability of U.S. Nuclear Reactors to Major Natural Disasters".)
